Book Initial Survey of the Impact of Tropical Cyclone Larry on Reefs and Islands in the Central Great Barrier Reef

Download or read book Initial Survey of the Impact of Tropical Cyclone Larry on Reefs and Islands in the Central Great Barrier Reef written by Andrew Chin and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 23 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tropical Cyclone Larry (TC Larry) crossed the Queensland coast on 20 March 2006, close to the town of Innisfail. TC Larry was a severe Category 5 cyclone and generated a 50km wide band of 'very destructive' winds between Cairns and Tully. To the north 'destructive' winds were experienced in a band between Cairns and Cape Tribulation. To the south 'destructive' winds were experienced between Tully and the Hinchinbrook/Cardwell region. To assess the impact of TC Larry, the Research and Monitoring Coordination Unit inspected eight reefs between Townsville and Cairns (between 17o and 19o South). This included surveying six reefs primarily for Cyclone impacts, and an additional two reefs as part of the on-going Coral Bleaching Response Programme. These reefs lie perpendicular to TC Larry's track and represent exposure to a variety of wind strengths.

Book An Atlas of Tropical Cyclones in the Great Barrier Reef Region 1969 1997

Download or read book An Atlas of Tropical Cyclones in the Great Barrier Reef Region 1969 1997 written by Marjetta Lee Puotinen and published by . This book was released on 1997 with total page 422 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tropical cyclones generate high winds, large waves and often massive rainfall that can cause major damage to the coral reefs of the Great Barrier Reef Region. This atlas provides a first step towards understanding the risk of cyclone damage to coral reefs and other associated ecosystems of the Great Barrier Reef Region by facilitating an examination of the history (climatology) of cyclones across the region over time.

Book Indian Ocean Tropical Cyclones and Climate Change

Download or read book Indian Ocean Tropical Cyclones and Climate Change written by Yassine Charabi and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2010-01-19 with total page 355 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tropical cyclones are topic that is not appropriately known to the public at large, but climate change has been on the public’s mind since the last decade and a concern that has peaked in the new millennium. Like the television programs of Jean Yves Cousteau the ‘plight of the oceans’, have recent documentaries nurtured a conscio- ness that major climatological changes are in the offing, even have started to develop. The retreat of glaciers on mountain tops and in Polar Regions is ‘being seen’ on ‘the small screen’ and has favored an environmental awareness in all populations that are enjoying an average well-being on Planet Earth. The vivid images on screen of storms, floods, and tsunamis share the fear provoking landscapes of deforestation, desertification and the like. Watching such as this one is seen are voices warning of what over is ‘in store’ if the causative problems are not remedied. Talking and d- cussing are useful, but action must follow. Understanding the full ramifications of climate change on tropical cyclones is a task that will takes several decades. In Climate Change 2007, the Fourth Assessment Report of the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) a high probability of major changes in tropical cyclone activity across the various ocean basins is highlighted.

Book Tropical Cyclones

    Book Details:
  • Author : James P. Terry
  • Publisher : Springer
  • Release : 2010-10-18
  • ISBN : 9781441924476
  • Pages : 0 pages

Download or read book Tropical Cyclones written by James P. Terry and published by Springer. This book was released on 2010-10-18 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This original book describes the behavior of tropical cyclones in the South Pacific. It investigates the broad range of disturbance effects these violent storms have on the physical environments of the islands that lie in their path and the people who live on them. It is the first book to link these two themes – the characteristics of cyclones and their landscape impacts. Examples and illustrations are drawn widely from across the region, resulting in a highly readable volume.

Book The Impact of Hurricane Lenny on Coral Reefs and Its Relevance to Pleistocene Reef Communities

Download or read book The Impact of Hurricane Lenny on Coral Reefs and Its Relevance to Pleistocene Reef Communities written by and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Storms such as hurricanes can dramatically impact a coral reef. In November 1999, Hurricane Lenny traveled an unusual west to east path across the central Caribbean approximately 480 kilometers north of the island of Curacao. Reef damage surveys at 33 sites conducted just months after the storm documented occurrences of toppling, fragmentation, tissue damage, bleaching, and smothering due to the storm. Several factors influenced the degree of damage experienced by the reef, including the trend of the shoreline, coral growth form, colony size, and water depth. Curacao's location outside of the major hurricane belt and well south of the track of Hurricane Lenny shows that rarely disturbed reefs can incur significant damage by storm-generated waves that travel across a great distance. Pleistocene reef communities on the island preserve the same species of corals and reef zonation present on many modern reefs throughout the Caribbean. Transects conducted along the fossil reefs show that different reef paleoenvironments (reef crest vs backreef) have different relative abundances of components. These different environments also preserve corals in the position of growth to differing extents. Many large coral colonies are preserved in growth position with the presence of few or no encrusting or boring organisms. These observations suggest a very rapid burial, possibly associated with a major regression while the corals were still alive. Although storm features on modern reefs, such as toppling and fragmentation, may potentially be preserved in the Pleistocene reefs of Curacao, these features are difficult to differentiate from those that were produced by other natural day-to-day processes such as bioerosion and processes involved with a rapid regression, including large-scale movement of sands from nearshore beaches or dunes.

Book Tropical Cyclone Origin Movement and Intensity Characteristics Based on Data Compositing Techniques

Download or read book Tropical Cyclone Origin Movement and Intensity Characteristics Based on Data Compositing Techniques written by W. M. Gray and published by . This book was released on 1979 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Up-to-date results of recent tropical cyclone research at Colorado State University are presented. Particular attention is paid to new findings which impact on tropical cyclone analysis and forecasting efforts. Observational studies using large amounts of composited rawinsonde, satellite, and aircraft flight data have been performed to analyze global aspects of tropical cyclone occurrences, physical processes of tropical cyclone genesis, tropical cyclone intensity change, environmental factors influencing tropical cyclone turning motion 24-36 hours before the turn takes place, tropical cyclone intensity determination from upper tropospheric reconnaissance, and the diurnal variations of vertical motion in tropical weather systems.
