Book excerpt: Flame strengths of opposed-jet laminar methane-air diffusion flames were measured by the technique of Potter et al, with additives in the methane stream. Organic bromides and chlorides were revealed as inhibitors by this technique, with relative effectiveness of the various inhibitors in line with previously reported results for premixed flames. Introduction of potassium vapor in the fuel stream up to molar K/CH4 ratios of 1/16.4 gave no inhibiting effect, although bromine compounds at this level were quite powerful inhibitors. The mechanism of inhibition by alkali metal salts with oxygen-containing anions is discussed; it is proposed that gaseous KOH removes H and OH radicals via KOH + H to HOH + K and KOH + OH to HOH + KO. The mechanism is consistent with all known facts including the present results.
