Book The Inheritance Tax

Download or read book The Inheritance Tax written by Max West and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: West, Max. The Inheritance Tax. New York: Columbia College, 1893. 140 pp. Reprinted 2003 by The Lawbook Exchange, Ltd. ISBN 1-58477-333-2. Cloth. $60. * This was the first American work devoted to taxes on the devolution of real and personal property. Notable for its depth and range, this book considers the subject from three perspectives. The first traces the history of inheritance taxation from antiquity to about 1890 in continental Europe, the British Empire and the United States. The second explores its legal theory, especially in the laws of different states in the Union. The final analysis explores its connection to economic theory. West concludes that inheritance tax is an important democratic institution, one that helps to create a level playing field by eliminating an advantage enjoyed by the rich. Originally published as Volume IV, Number 2 in Columbia's series, Studies in History, Economics and Public Law.

Book The Inheritance Tax Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Inheritance Tax Classic Reprint written by Max West and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-19 with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Inheritance Tax The growing importance of the inheritance tax in America is shown by its adoption within a few years by a number of commonwealths, and by the consideration of the question in some form during the past winter by fully a dozen legislatures. As yet there has been no American work on the subject, treat ing it from other than a legal standpoint. Such being the case, an historical and economic examination of the subject may not be inappropriate at this time. The theoretical interest attaching to this mode of taxation is no less marked than its practical importance. The theory of the inheritance tax is many-sided and complex. From one point of View, it opens up the whole question of inheritance and bequest, a question which in the limits of this monograph can only be touched upon in the briefest manner possible. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Law and Practice of Inheritance Taxation in the State of New York The chapters on'procedure have been so arranged as to enable the practitioner to follow in sequence the nec essary steps to be taken, the subject of non-resident es tates being contained in a separate chapter to obviate the confusion which might otherwise arise by an attempt to treat together resident and non-resident estates. They are designed to anticipate and answer the questions usually asked by the practitioner who is not thoroughly familiar with transfer tax procedure. As most of the questions of practice are dealt with and determined in the unreported adjudications of the surrogates, their opinions have been quoted from wherever possible. Book Taxation of Estates and Inheritances Under Federal and State Laws

Download or read book Taxation of Estates and Inheritances Under Federal and State Laws written by Spencer Trask and Company and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-09 with total page 38 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Taxation of Estates and Inheritances Under Federal and State Laws: Brief Summaries of the More Important Features; Tables of Rates and Exemptions Some States go even so far as to claim a tax where a non-resident decedent held stock in a foreign corporation which has property within the State. In such cases, however, as in the case of non-registered bonds, it is difficult, if not practically impossible, for a State to enforce its claim. Some States tax securities of foreign corporations, belonging to non-resident decedents, if the certificates or evidences of obligation are physically located within the State. Wherever a tax is imposed on the transfer of property under a will or under the intestacy laws, the same tax is usually imposed on gifts mortis causa, that is, on gifts made during life but to take effect at death. In the following pages we present a summary of the rates and such other information as may be required to obtain a clear understanding of the relative positions of the various States, as well as the Federal Government, in respect to the burdens they impose upon decedents' estates. The Federal Tax is an estate tax, that is, it is levied upon the estate as a whole. The States generally impose inheritance taxes, or as they are sometimes called, succession taxes, which are levied upon each individual's share of the estate.
