Book Sheath Blight Disease of Rice

Download or read book Sheath Blight Disease of Rice written by K. Manibhushan Rao and published by Daya Books. This book was released on 1995 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sheat blight (ShB) is considered as one of the serious diseases of rice in Asian countries and the USA. The increase in ShB incidence is largely due to changes in the rice cultivation methods as well as in the use of early-maturing, semi-dwarf, high-yielding and N-responsive cultivars. Against this background, this monographic study is aimed primarily presenting the status of our knowledge by compiling the literature available as well as the author s own experience on rice diseases over three decades. The book is meant primarily for the graduate students, rice pathologists and extension workers. This compendium should not only stimulated further research but also will be used for ShB management. It traces the history of the disease, the casual agents, its nomenclature, taxonomy, morphology, physiology, variability, histopathology and ultra structure. It is profusely illustrated with excellent plates and number of tables which project the current status in a better way. Also information has been given on the disease management by induced resistance as well as biocontrol and the future resistance as well as biocontrol and the future perspectives on this important rice disease. Book Pest Management in Rice

Download or read book Pest Management in Rice written by L.G. Copping and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 553 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The four-day international Conference on Pest Management in Rice, which is the subject of this volume, was the third in an ongoing series of meetings on tropical crops organised by the Pesticides Group of the Society of Chemical Industry, London. The participants came from both the public and private sectors and from many different countries. All the major groups of pests-weeds, microorganisms, arthropods and rodents-were considered, as the organisers believe that it is necessary to address the total pest management problems in each particular growing area, and the variety of the papers indicates the importance of a multi disciplinary approach to their solution. Rice is one of the most important world crops and is the major source of food for around 60% of the world's population, with a world production of 500 million tonnes from 150 million hectares of land. Since world stocks amount to only two months supply, many people are at risk from famine. Moreover, it has been esti mated that the world requirement in 2020 will be about 760 million tonnes, an increase of 50%. This pressure of population on food makes efficient pest management vital and is the reason for bringing together experts from all over the world to this major conference.

Book Inheritance of Resistance to Rice Bacterial Leaf Blight

Download or read book Inheritance of Resistance to Rice Bacterial Leaf Blight written by Innocent Habarurema and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2013 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bacterial leaf blight of rice, caused by Xanthomonas oryzae pv.oryzae, is a vascular and devastating disease of irrigated lowland and rainfed rice, Oryza sativa L. It occurs in form of complete wilting and death of affected leaves. It is widespread throughout several rice growing countries of Asia, Australia, America and Africa, contributing to substantial yield losses of up to 50%. The use of resistant cultivars is the cost-effective, environmentally-friendly and sustainable way to control the rice bacterial leaf blight among resource-poor farmers. However, detailed information on pathogen diversity in Uganda is not available. Furthermore, the genetic mechanism for resistance carried by the germplasm assembled in Uganda is not yet elucidated. The current study seeks therefore to determine the nature of inheritance of resistance to bacterial leaf blight in rice under pathogen races evolved in Ugandan environments to subsequently establish a better breeding strategy.

Book A Toolbox for Managing Blast and Sheath Blight Diseases of Rice in the United States of America

Download or read book A Toolbox for Managing Blast and Sheath Blight Diseases of Rice in the United States of America written by Yulin Jia and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rice blast disease caused by the fungus Magnaporthe oryzae and rice sheath blight disease caused by the fungus Rhizoctonia solani are two major hurdles for stable rice production worldwide. Presently, fungicides are still needed to manage these two devastating fungal pathogens. After two decades of research efforts, a toolbox has been assembled with the following components: (1) insight into pathogen genomic identity and pathogen avirulence (AVR) genes that can be used to enhance plant breeding; (2) new mapping populations and germplasm and genetic stocks that can be used as starting materials to identify effective host resistance (R) genes; (3) user-friendly disease evaluation methods that can be used to accelerate the identification and utilization of R genes; (4) validated effective R genes that are readily available for improving genetic resistance; (5) host genetic markers that can be used to accelerate the development of new resistant germplasms/cultivars; and (6) an improved understanding of resistance mechanisms that can facilitate the engineering of resistance in commercial varieties. Appropriate employment of these tools in breeding and crop protection will reduce production costs and create an environmentally benign, sustainable rice production system.

Book STUDIES ON THE INHERITANCE OF RESISTANCE TO RICE BLIGHT DISEASE

Download or read book STUDIES ON THE INHERITANCE OF RESISTANCE TO RICE BLIGHT DISEASE written by and published by . This book was released on 1965 with total page 10 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: More than 100 varieties of rice, including domestic and foreign varieties, were tested for resistance to disease. This year 100 different varieties were tested for disease resistance, including the disease resistance of various strains of rice. The different varieties of rice used in these tests included primarily the main disease resistant strains used for the breeding of disease resistant varieties by the Chinese Agricultural Experimental Station, some varieties possessed by the Agricultural Research Laboratory, and other varieties and strains received from the Fujisaka Testing Station and other organizations. Of these varieties, those received from the Chinese Agricultural Experimental Station were already known to be disease resistant, and therefore we conducted tests on these particular varieties with respect to their resistance to a wider range of pathogens. The strains of fungi used were the same as those used in the previous year, that is, a variety of fungi, which could be classified into seven strains.
