Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A major reassessment of the development of race and subjecthood in the British Atlantic Focusing on Jamaica, Britain’s most valuable colony in the Americas by the mid-eighteenth century, Brooke Newman explores the relationship between racial classifications and the inherited rights and privileges associated with British subject status. Weaving together a diverse range of sources, she shows how colonial racial ideologies rooted in fictions of blood ancestry at once justified permanent, hereditary slavery for Africans and barred members of certain marginalized groups from laying claim to British liberties on the basis of hereditary status.

Download or read book History of Inheritance Law written by Harry L. Munsinger J.D. Ph.D. and published by Archway Publishing. This book was released on 2020-11-09 with total page 154 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Experts estimate that eighty percent of household wealth is inherited, and the average American who died in 2015 left approximately $177,000 to his or her family. Harry L. Munsinger, a lawyer practicing in Texas, explores the history of inheritance law in this fascinating book. Topics include: • English laws of succession, which evolved to favor wealthy families by passing real estate and family titles to the eldest surviving son. In contrast, the American colonies developed a democratic system of inheritance where land was divided equally among all the sons. • Goals of early inheritance laws, which were to keep ancestral lands in the family and to determine who would take the land when a father died. • Ways American laws of succession followed English common law during the colonial period and then developed variations more suited to America’s social and economic needs after the colonies won their independence from Britain. The author also highlights how any interested party can allege a defect in the execution of a will, how trusts were developed by courts of equity to avoid the rigid rules of English common law governing legal title and use of real property, and how families can safely and effectively transfer wealth.

I shall need a deal of directing, for I hare already made several blunders in my endeavor to reach my destination. Step to the right; there is a floor-plank-loose just opposite the door. As Perry carefully deviated in the direction, indicated, his unseen companion threw open an inner door, and stood revealed in a flood of light. Perry's first impression was that never before had he seen so handsome a girl and a face so full of character; his second, that the face was marred by a certain cloudiness of expression which spoke of pride and of discontent. CHAPTER V. Felix had no time for further reflection. The room they entered was large but bare; on the walla were hung some execrably painted family portraits. The fireplace was a huge black affair, totally devoid of taste, and resembling the entrance to some gloomy mausoleum. On one side of the chimney there stood a table, on which were, in a confused mass, books, spurs, whips, baskets, and a dozen other incongruous things. On the other side, a heavy lounge, and reclining on it a pale, middle-aged woman, so startlingly like Perry's companion?in a sketchy, uncertain, and rather unpleasant way?as at once to proclaim them mother and daughter. Covering this recumbent formwas a shawl that must have once possessed brilliant hues, the glory of which had been dimmed by age. At the foot of the lounge sat a young and demure- looking girl of about eighteen, with inquisitive eyes and a mass of fluffy, golden hair. By her side lay a large white setter, whose soft, affecionate eyes blinked lazily at his young mistress as she entered the room. In one corner there stood a large, strange-looking model or machine, a mass ...

Book Reunited The Famous Key Family of Colonial Virginia

Download or read book Reunited The Famous Key Family of Colonial Virginia written by Gene C. Key and published by CreateSpace. This book was released on 2014-04-11 with total page 450 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1931, Julian C. Lane published a book on the history of the Key Family titled "Key and Allied Families." Her work has been considered to be the basis for many Key Family Histories since that time. However, she had many inaccurate family connections. One is led to believe that all of the Key families of the early colonial times were related. Such, however, is not true. She also tends to link the Moses Key Family in Pennsylvania and the family of Frances Scott Key as all being related to the Keys of Colonial Virginia. Present day DNA testing of the Male Y - Chromosome has proven that these three families are not even remotely related. Julian C. Lane simply compiled family histories that were sent to her and in some cases she mistakenly linked some together. However, considering that she did not have the present day tools of research and the computer, she did the best that she could do. I was able to find valuable information about my family line through her book. I must say that I would have had a hard time find who my Chesterfield County, South Carolina ancestors were if it had not been for Julian C. Lane. This work, "Reunited --- The Famous Key Family of Colonial Virginia" will deal only with the descendants of John Key who arrived in 1668. There will be another book at a later date that will include the other Key Families. This is a four volume set with the index being in volume four. Eighteen hundred plus pages is simply too many pages for even a two volume set. One needs to obtain all four volumes in order to have the complete genealogy. Let me say also that John Key of 1668 has well more than 250,000 descendants today. It is then impossible to list them all. The value of this work and of any other genealogy is not just being able to find your name listed. As you work your way back in your ancestors however, you will likely find how your Key Family links to the Keys of Virginia. That will be the real value of this genealogy.
