Book Ben Nicholson and Winifred Nicholson

Download or read book Ben Nicholson and Winifred Nicholson written by Jovan Nicholson and published by Philip Wilson Publishers. This book was released on 2013-09-30 with total page 98 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the artistic partnership of Ben Nicholson and Winifred Nicholson in the 1920s and their friendship and collaboration with Christopher Wood, Alfred Wallis, and the potter William Staite Murray. Inspired by each other, the Nicholsons experimented furiously and often painted the same subject, one as a colorist the other more interested in form. Winifred wrote of her time with Ben, 'All artists are unique and can only unite as complementaries not as similarities'. New research based on previously unpublished letters, photographs and other material draws out their fascinating connections. All the works, many of which are previously unpublished, are illustrated in full color, each with comments relating to the work by the artists and their critics.

Download or read book The Story of Guildford written by Marion Field and published by The History Press. This book was released on 2022-04-07 with total page 279 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Guildford's history dates from Saxon times, and the town has been the residence of kings and many famous men and women, particularly since Henry II turned the Norman castle into a luxurious palace in the twelfth century. Also amongst the town's famous and influential faces was George Abbot, who became Archbishop of Canterbury in 1611 and was one of the translators of the King James Bible and founded Abbot's Hospital in 1619 – an early example of 'sheltered housing', which still fulfils that role to this day. High above the town is the Cathedral of the Holy Spirit. Consecrated in 1961, it was the first cathedral to be built in the South of England since the Reformation. Below it is the University of Surrey, which received its Royal Charter just a few years later. Guildford's people and visitors throughout history come to life in this well-researched account, which also examines the town's architectural development and heritage, from the castle and medieval guildhall to the modern cathedral and beyond, portraying Guildford's significance on a national and sometimes international scale.

Book The Sculpture of Leon Underwood

Download or read book The Sculpture of Leon Underwood written by Ben Whitworth and published by Ben Uri Gallery & Museum. This book was released on 2000 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The twentieth century saw the arrival of numerous innovative and pioneering sculptors. Yet while Jacob Epstein, Eric Gill, Henry Moore and Barbara Hepworth are frequently touted as the figureheads of modern British sculpture, the contribution made by Leon Underwood has largely been ignored." "Straddling two discrete periods in the development of twentieth-century sculpture, Underwood was a transitional figure who embraced the principles of direct carving developed by artists such as Gill, Epstein and Henri Gaudier-Brzeska, while maintaining a distance from the later practice of abstraction. His interest in 'primitive' art undoubtedly affected Henry Moore, who studied at Underwood's Brook Green School in London during the 1920s." "Addressing the key stages in Underwood's development as a sculptor, Ben Whitworth unravels the motivations and inspirations that guided the artist's career. The Sculpture of Leon Underwood includes the first catalogue of Underwood's sculptural oeuvre, plus a list of solo and group exhibitions. Aiming to re-establish Underwood as a serious contributor to British twentieth-century sculpture and to stimulate greater awareness of the complexity of British modernism, this book is essential reading for academic and general readers alike."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. Book excerpt: This is the first book to present a comprehensive overview of the entire career of British artist Richard Eurich (1903-1992), a figurative painter of compelling power and often visionary intensity who brought rare imaginative reserves to his depiction of the world around him, as well as to his apprehension of the mysterious and unseen. Eurich was a private man, not given to self-promotion, and as such has not received the widespread attention he deserves. The Art of Richard Eurich locates the artist within the context of 20th-century British art, demonstrating his relevance in all quarters of the art world of the period. Eurich was a draughtsman, landscape painter, teacher, war artist, autobiographer, marine painter extraordinaire, portrait painter, figure painter, satirist, genre painter, visual poet of the beach, and occasional sculptor. His many creative talents are united in this compelling analysis of the man who was responsible for them. Featuring a wide selection of his artworks, from the topographical to the visionary, from the drawn to the painted, this book unspools the narrative of Eurich's life through expertly selected paintings and drawings, and places him in relation to his fellow artists, friends, and contemporaries.
