Book excerpt: Observational data are given on the infrared irradiance from stars. These data and certain criteria, postulated herein, enable a prediction of the number of stars that yield spectral irradiances (to 22 microns) which equal or exceed indicated levels. Establishment of credible growth rates of the number of stars with stellar magnitude, in the infrared, constitutes the critical element of the prediction technique. The prediction is speculative. It should be closer to reality, however, than current predictions based on spectral extrapolation from the visual components of the radiation of stars. (Author).

The understanding of such things leads to further engineering applications. Companions to such theoretical books will be compendia of property data; the triad is completed by monographs on the use of the materials in op tical and electro-optical systems. Laser materials, lasers, and laser sys tems form one of the groups which will comprise the full set of ready-reference material for the entire field. The Series will be intentionally international, including a fair sampling of Russian work. There are important benefits to be obtained in the alternate approaches often taken by our Soviet and other foreign colleagues (just as they can gain from studying ours).

Book excerpt: This volume contains a series of lectures presented at the 4th Course of the International School of Astrophysics, held in Erice (Sicily) from July 9 - July 20, 1977 at the "E. Majorana" Centre for Scientific Culture. The course was fully supported by a grant from the NATO Advanced Study Institute Programme. It was attended by 82 participants from 15 countries. Even though the infrared portion of the electromagnetic spectrum covers an extensive interval from the red region of the optical spectrum (10,000 A) to the microwave radio region (1 mm), its role in astronomy has been minimal until the last two decades. Until very recently, the only objects observed were the sun, the moon and the planets. A primary reason for this late development was the lack of sensitive detectors and the necessary cryogenic technology that must accompany their use. Recent progress in this technology has been paralleled by an ever increasing interest of astronomers in infrared observations, leading to a number of ex tremely important results in different branches of astronomy. This becomes evident when one realizes that in many astrophysical conditions most of the energy is found to be channeled into the infrared portion of the electromagnetic spectrum. Stars were detected that yield most of their radiation in the infrared; these objects present a new view of stellar evolution, both in the birth and death stages.

Book excerpt: We have increased the spectral resolution and accuracy of the absolute infrared spectral flux for a subset of stellar standards created by Cohen and his collaborators in previous papers in this series. We combined the moderate-resolution spectroscopy obtained on infrared standard stars by the Short Wavelength Spectrometer on the Infrared Space Observatory with high-quality photometry that is tied to our recent absolute calibration from the Midcourse Space Experiment. New spectra were created for 33 stars, 9 of which are Cohen et al. secondary standards and another 20 of which are tertiary standards for which Cohen adopted spectral templates. The effective temperatures and angular diameters for the stars are derived from the absolute spectra and compare favorably with independent measures of these quantities in the literature. The present spectra display systematic differences with those of Cohen and colleagues in that they have 4%-7% lower fluxes in the 1-4 micrometer spectral region. Our spectra remove the A-K star calibration bias recently noted in the calibration of the Spitzer Space Telescope camera.

Book excerpt: A multi-band photoelectric photometer for making observations in the U, B, V, and infrared bands W(1.06 microns) X(1.13 microns), Y(1.63 microns) and Z(2.21 microns) was constructed and applied to both stellar and planetary observations. The results of photometry obtained for 61 stars are presented. The observations at lambda = 1.63 microns are shown to exhibit an excess flux due to a minimum in the H opacity in accordance with the predictions of model atmosphere studies. Bolometric corrections are derived for stars of late spectral type from integration of the observed absolute spectral irradiance curve. A simple photometric method for measuring stellar diameters is proposed based upon the absolute irradiance observed at 2.21 microns and the 2.21 microns flux at the surface of the star calculated from model atmospheres. Angular diameters derived by this technique are consistent with interferometric results and, when combined with the bolometric corrections, effective temperatures are found. (Author).
