Book Infrared Measurements of AFGL Air Force Geophysics Laboratory Sources

Download or read book Infrared Measurements of AFGL Air Force Geophysics Laboratory Sources written by R. D. Gehrz and published by . This book was released on 1983 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We report infrared positions and multicolor infrared photometry for a sample of type II OH/IR stars. The infrared colors and 11.4 -micrometer silicate optical depths of the low-latitude sources in this group increase as a function of distance, suggesting that interstellar reddening must be taken into account in assessing their infrared energy distributions. Redding gradients between 1 and 3 times higher than the mean gradient in the direction of the galactic center are required to account for the observed color-distance correlation, a fact which might be explained by these stars' confinement to spiral arms. The noise limited magnitudes for the AFGL Infrared Sky Survey have been estimated by direct comparison with ground based observations. Using these limiting magnitudes pruned versions of the AFGL catalog have been generated. Infrared observations of all the stellar objects seen at 11, 20 or 27 micrometers and a statistical sample of the stars seen only at 4 micrometers are reported. Analysis of the observations leads to estimates of the absolute 4 and 10 micrometers magnitudes and space densities for the two classes of objects. The expected results from the Infrared Astronomical Satellite are re-examined. (Author).

Book The AFGL Four Color Infrared Sky Survey

Download or read book The AFGL Four Color Infrared Sky Survey written by Stephan D. Price and published by . This book was released on 1977 with total page 90 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Positions and magnitude measurements at effective wavelengths of 4.2, 11.0, 19.8, and 27.4 micrometers are reported for an additional 2477 sources observed during the AFGL survey program. These sources were obtained by relaxing the stringent selection criteria used for the main catalog and subjectively selecting those that have associations and/or other characteristics which make them of interest for future investigation.

Book The Revised AFGL Air Force Geophysics Laboratory Infrared Sky Survey Catalog

Download or read book The Revised AFGL Air Force Geophysics Laboratory Infrared Sky Survey Catalog written by Stephan D. Price and published by . This book was released on 1983 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Infrared survey measurements obtained from two probeborne experiments flown in 1982 combined with extensive ground-based observations on AFGL sources are incorporated into a revised AFGL Four Color Infrared Survey catalog. Over 92 percent of the sky has been covered at 11 and 20 micron, 71 percent at 4 micron and 47 percent at high sensitivity at 27 micron. There are 2970 entries in the main catalog, most of which are multicolor observations. The catalog contents are resolved into two general groups: a disk population (slope= 0.4) with means colors m (11)-m(20)=2.0 and m(20)-m(27)=0.9 corresponding to color temperatures of 270K and 185K, respectively, and a spherical distribution (slope = 0.6) with a mean color difference of m(11)-m(20)=1.0 corresponding to T sub c approx = 10 480K.

Book Further Ground Based Studies of Sources from the AFGL Air Force Geophysics Laboratory Infrared Sky Survey

Download or read book Further Ground Based Studies of Sources from the AFGL Air Force Geophysics Laboratory Infrared Sky Survey written by B. Jones and published by . This book was released on 1984 with total page 119 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sixteen bright infrared celestial sources were monitored from the ground over a 3 year timespan with broadband filters from 1.2 to 18 microns. Higher resolution narrow-band spectra were also obtained for 3 of the sixteen objects, principally in the 8 to 14 micron region. The combination of variability timescales and spectra permit rough identification of the object class for individual objects. Keywords include: Galactic structure; Infrared sources; Stars.

Book Handbook of Geophysics and Space Environments

Download or read book Handbook of Geophysics and Space Environments written by Air Force Cambridge Research Laboratories (U.S.) and published by . This book was released on 1965 with total page 728 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This handbook is a comprehensive collection of data, formulas, definitions, and theories concerning the natural environment. It was written by scientists of the Air Force Cambridge Research Laboratories (AFCRL) which, in 1976, became the Air Force Geophysics Laboratory (AFGL). It was designed to serve a broad spectrum of users: the planner, designer, developer, and operator of aerospace systems; the scientist who will find the tables and figures a convenient reference in his own field; the specialist who needs environmental data in another discipline; and science minded people who seek a summary of space-age environmental research. Revisions of individual chapters and sections of this handbook will be published as additional environmental research efforts pay off in new knowledge.

Book The Far Infrared Sky Survey Experiment Final Report

Download or read book The Far Infrared Sky Survey Experiment Final Report written by Stephan D. Price and published by . This book was released on 1983 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Approximately 9000 square degrees of the celestial sphere was surveyed in four infrared bands with a rocket-probe-borne telescope. This Far Infrared Sky Survey Experiment (FIRSSE) covered the galactic plane between 120 degrees and 255 degrees longitude and the Orion and Taurus Molecular Clouds. A list of almost 300 bright 90 μm sources is presented along with associated measurements at 20, 27, and 40 μm. A description is given of the conduct of the experiment, the first space-borne use of super-fluid helium under active thermal loading.

Book An Infrared Survey of the Diffuse Emission Within 5 of the Galactic Plane

Download or read book An Infrared Survey of the Diffuse Emission Within 5 of the Galactic Plane written by Stephan D. Price and published by . This book was released on 1980 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The AFGL Infrared Sky Survey data have been processed to deconvolve the low frequency attenuation, restoring the signals from extended sources. The 11 and 20-micrometer scans which cover three quarters of the galactic plane have been analyzed, with lesser area covered at 4 and 27 micrometers. A detailed description is given of the instrumentation, the conduct of the experiment, and the data reduction procedures. The measured extended emission in the 3- to 30-micrometer region may be divided into several components. A number of discrete, extended sources are observed within 5 deg of the galactic plane, the majority of which are associated with HII regions. About 25 percent of these sources are not in the AFGL catalog. A large scale diffuse emission is centered on the galactic plane at longitudes less than 90 deg from the galactic center. The 11 to 20-micrometer color ratio of this emission is distinctly smaller in the direction of the Perseus external arm and the Sagittarius-Carina spiral than closer to the center (1
