Download or read book The Forbidden written by Benito Pérez Galdós and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2009-03-26 with total page 403 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Benito Pérez Galdós, considered Spain’s most important novelist after Cervantes, wrote 77 novels, several works of theater and a number of other tomes during his lifetime (1843–1920). His works have been translated into all major languages of the world, and many of his most highly regarded novels, those of the contemporary period, have been translated into English two, three and even four times over. Of the few “contemporary novels” of Galdós that until now have not come to light in English, The Forbidden is certainly among the most noteworthy. The story line concerns a wealthy philanderer, José María Bueno de Guzmán, who attempts to buy the favors of his three beautiful married cousins. He is successful with the first, Eloísa, a grasping materialist who falls deeply in love with him. Then he rejects her in order to attempt to seduce the youngest, Camila. Meanwhile, the third, the pseudo-intellectual María Juana, jealous, seduces José María. But it is Camila, healthy, impetuous and wild, who resists his temptations and holds our attention. The novelist and critic Leopoldo Alas, Galdós’s contemporary, calls her “the most feminine, graceful, lively female character that any modern novelist has painted.” As a naturalistic study, in the manner of Balzac in particular, principal characters of Galdós’s other novels (El doctor Centeno, La de Bringas, La familia de León Roch) become fleetingly visible in The Forbidden. In addition, the entire Bueno de Guzmán family gives evidence of the naturalistic emphasis on heredity: they all display certain physical or mental disorders. Eloísa has a morbid fear of feathers, María Juana often feels that she has a tiny piece of cloth caught in her teeth, José María suffers bouts of depression, an uncle is a kleptomaniac, one of the relatives writes letters to himself, etc. At the same time, this novel shows the foibles of Spanish society where status is determined by one’s associates, by the wearing of finery, and by living on borrowed money. In their history of Spanish literature, Chandler and Schwartz call Galdós “the greatest novelist of the nineteenth century and the only one who deserves to be mentioned in the same breath with great novelists like Balzac, Dickens and Dostoievsky.” The Forbidden, written at the height of the author’s creative powers, is a major work and its publication for an English-speaking audience is long overdue.

Download or read book Learning to Educate written by Ernesto Schiefelbein and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-04-13 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Learning to Educate: Proposals for the Reconstruction of Education in Developing Countries is a practical and strategic guide for education leaders and others who want to do more to improve the quality of curriculum, learning, teaching, and assessment. The book is also a philosophical guide that articulates and affirms the fundamental values and purposes of education in a rapidly changing world. It confronts us with the opportunity and the necessity to unravel bedrock assumptions and stimulate further discussion about the nature of teaching and learning. What does it take to change mindsets? And how do we bring about “reconstruction” without losing our groundings and bearings? The authors, Ernesto Schiefelbein and Noel McGinn, use the full weight of their extensive knowledge in education research, teaching, policy, and action, to argue that, in order to reconstruct quality education, we must begin by improving its foundation. The result is a seasoned and superbly articulated examination of the principles and practices of teaching and learning, which focuses on the crucial need of all children to learn how to learn. Innovative, cultured, and consistently captivating, this book is bold and, in the field of comparative and international education, unprecedented. “... Current and cutting-edge knowledge on critically important dimensions of effective teaching and learning ...” – N’Dri Thérèse Assié-Lumumba, Cornell University “... A treasury of insights into the education challenge currently proposed by the UN global 2030 Agenda: universal quality learning ...” – Kenneth King, University of Edinburgh “... A helpful roadmap to the essential questions facing educators today ...” – Fernando M. Reimers, Harvard University

Download or read book Global Environment Outlook GEO 6 Summary for Policymakers written by UN Environment and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2019-08-01 with total page 25 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Published to coincide with the Fourth United Nations Environmental Assembly, the Summary for Policymakers of the sixth Global Environment Outlook provides an evidence-based source of environmental information to help policymakers in government, local authorities and businesses achieve the UN's Sustainable Development Goals. Since the first edition in 1997, there have been many examples of environmental improvement, especially where problems have been well identified, manageable, and where regulatory and technological solutions have been readily available. Nevertheless, the overall condition of the global environment has deteriorated and urgent action, involving ambitious and effective policies, is necessary to arrest and reverse this situation. This Summary for Policymakers answers key policy questions by assessing the drivers of environmental change, the scale and effectiveness of policy responses, potential pathways for achieving sustainability goals in an increasingly complex world, and the data and information that can support the decision-making process. Also available as Open Access on Cambridge Core.
