Book Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences

Download or read book Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences written by Wade H. Shafer and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences was first conceived, published, and disseminated by the Center for Information and Numerical Data Analysis and Synthesis (CINDAS) * at Purdue University in 1 957, starting its coverage of theses with the academic year 1955. Beginning with Volume 13, the printing and dissemination phases of the activity were transferred to University Microfilms/Xerox of Ann Arbor, Michigan, with the thought that such an arrangement would be more beneficial to the academic and general scientific and technical community. After five years of this joint undertaking we had concluded that it was in the interest of all con cerned if the printing and distribution of the volumes were handled by an interna tional publishing house to assure improved service and broader dissemination. Hence, starting with Volume 18, Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences has been disseminated on a worldwide basis by Plenum Publishing Cor poration of New York, and in the same year the coverage was broadened to include Canadian universities. All back issues can also be ordered from Plenum. We have reported in Volume 28 (thesis year 1 983) a total of 10,661 theses titles from 26 Canadian and 197 United States universities. We are sure that this broader base for these titles reported will greatly enhance the value of this important annual reference work. While Volume 28 reports theses submitted in-1983, on occasion, certain univer sities do report theses submitted in previous years but not reported at the time.

Book Review of Progress in Quantitative Nondestructive Evaluation

This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 1790 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume (Parts A and B) contains the edited papers presented at the annual Review of Progress in Quan?itative Nondestructive Evalua tion held at the University of California (San Diego) in LaJo11a, August 3-8, 1986. The Review was organized and sponsored by the Center for NDE at Iowa State University and the Ames Laboratory, in cooperation with the Office of Basic Energy Sciences, USDOE, and the Materia1s Laboratory at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base. Approximately 400 attendees, a new record, representing various government agencies, industry, and universities participated in the technical presentations, poster sessions, and discussions. This Review, with its wide-ranging interchange of technical information, stands as one of the most compre hensive in the field of NDE research and engineering. In order to present the reader with a more usefu1 document, we have organized the symposium papers in these Proceedings by subject rather than by the order of presentation at the Review. Topical subject headings have been selected under which the 1arge majority of papers wou1d reasonably falI. Here, again, we have revised the format used in former years to accommodate an evolving focus of interest in the field. These categories cover a broad spectrum of research in NDE and encompass activities from fundamental work to early engineering applications. In the following paragraphs we offer a brief summary of the research presented in these Proceedings.

Book Fracture Mechanics and Acoustic Emission Response of Retrogression Reaged 7075 T6 Aluminum Alloy

Download or read book Fracture Mechanics and Acoustic Emission Response of Retrogression Reaged 7075 T6 Aluminum Alloy written by K. I. McRae and published by . This book was released on 1982 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Stress corrosion cracking of high strength, structural aluminum alloys, such as 7075 in the T6 temper, is a commonly encountered problem. Recently, an alternative heat treatment, known as retrogression and reaging, has been proposed. It is purported that this heat treatment imparts a stress corrosion cracking resistance for 7075-T6 equal to that of the T73 temper, with only a negligible decrease in yield strength. In order to fully characterize this heat treatment, the plane strain fracture toughness, KIc, and the resistance to fatigue crack growth were compared to those of the same alloy in the normal T6 condition. Small increases in each of these mechanical properties were detected. The acoustic emission (AE) response to crack growth during testing was also investigated. It was determined that the number of AE signals is proportional to the crack length or total crack area. This response is consistent with proposed mechanisms for acoustic emission in this material. It is further noted that no significant difference exists in the AE response of 7075-T6 in the normal and retrogression-reaged conditions. (Author).

Book Correlation of Acoustic Emission Generated During Uniform Biaxial Loading to Microstructural Sources in 7075 T651 Aluminum and 21Cr 6Ni 9Mn Stainless Steel Final Report

This book was released on 1981 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper reports on the effect on acoustic emission (AE) of uniform biaxial loading of a thin-walled tube designed by Hamstad, Patterson and Mukherjee. The AE generated during biaxial loading of 7075-T651 aluminum and 21Cr-6Ni-9Mn stainless steel had several anomalous features relative to tensile generated AE. The biaxial AE data was of a much higher level and peaked at a lower strain than the uniaxial AE response. A particle cracking model was proposed in which inclusions with the largest projected surface area perpendicular to the principal axis of applied loading will crack before smaller inclusions, and the resulting energy released per AE will be proportional to the crack surface area. The inclusion contents were studied with respect to size, shape, density, hardness, and fracture/decohesion behavior. The inclusions in both 7075-T651 and 21-6-9 display the preferred cracking orientation predicted in the Hamstad, et al. model and are shown to be associated with the generated AE. However, other factors appear to contribute to the total AE responses. There is evidence that for 7075-T651 subjected to biaxial loading, a grain boundary-related mechanism becomes a significant source of AE in the latter stages of strain hardening. Also, for both materials, the complex applied load during biaxial loading appears to amplify the level of AE.

Book Origin of Burst Type Acoustic Emission in Unflawed 7075 T6 Aluminum

Download or read book Origin of Burst Type Acoustic Emission in Unflawed 7075 T6 Aluminum written by R. Bianchetti and published by . This book was released on 1976 with total page 6 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tensile tests were used to study the acoustic emission from several 7075-T6 aluminum plates. Specimens from one plate produced a large burst-type emission in addition to the continuous emission. Metallographic and fracture surface studies indicated that the burst-type emission resulted from the brittle fracture of large (20 to 60 ?m) primary inclusions in the microstructure.

Book Correlation Between Acoustic Emission and Microstructure Final Technical Report

Download or read book Correlation Between Acoustic Emission and Microstructure Final Technical Report written by and published by . This book was released on 1977 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Acoustic emission from pure metals undergoing deformation is caused by dislocation unpinning and can be described by a theory which was a modified version of Gilman's mobile dislocation density theory. Acoustic emission from alloys can be dislocation related, but is primarily due to inclusion fracture. Factors affecting this include inclusion size, inclusion density, and the stress state. Inclusions crack more frequently during tensile testing than during fracture toughness testing.

Book Acoustic Emission Testing of Unflawed 7075 T6 Aluminum

Download or read book Acoustic Emission Testing of Unflawed 7075 T6 Aluminum written by MA. Hamstad and published by . This book was released on 1975 with total page 6 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tensile tests were performed to study the differences in the continuous acoustic emission from 7075-T6 aluminum plates made by five manufacturers. The grain structures and the chemical compositions of these plates were determined. Results are given on a sixth plate, which emitted burst-type acoustic emission super-imposed on the continuous acoustic emission. The effect of orientation with respect to the rolling direction within a single plate was studied. Results from interrupted tensile tests are also reported; these tests were stopped at about 4.5% strain for different time periods before they were resumed. The tests indicate that acoustic emission is very sensitive to differences between plates of 7075-T6 aluminum that do not show up on a stress-strain curve. Furthermore, the dislocation mechanisms that cause the continuous acoustic emission in this aluminum alloy are altered by room temperature, diffusion-based aging.
