Book Fluid Mulch Sprayed on the Field and Overlaid with Pigmented Latex

Download or read book Fluid Mulch Sprayed on the Field and Overlaid with Pigmented Latex written by Ali Mahmoudpour and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2009-09 with total page 80 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To study the effect of reflecting mulches on growth pattern and yield components of eggplant (Solanum melongena L., cv. 'Millionaire'), beds were treated with synthetic latex film as a mulch base. Colored pigments derived from oil-based paints in black, white, red, blue, yellow and silver were sprayed on the mulch base to provide differential coloration. Each experimental unit included three rows of 7.3 meters with eight plants per row. Each treatment was replicated in four blocks at two separate locations. Plants grown on silver-pigmented beds produced significantly greater fruit numbers and total fruit weight than other treatments. After eight harvests, up to 236% yield increase was observed in silver plots compared to the control. Initial flower and fruit set formations before harvest were significantly higher in silver plots compared to other treatments. Non-significant differences were observed with measurements of plant height and total dry weight of shoot and root within the treatments. It is assumed that altering microenvironment around the plants by mulch surface color is responsible for this variation.

Book WORLD VEGETABLE AND TUBER CROPS

Download or read book WORLD VEGETABLE AND TUBER CROPS written by Ratikanta Maiti and published by American Academic Press. This book was released on 2017-08-14 with total page 652 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Vegetables are rich and cheaper sources of vitamins. They supply good taste and palatability, increase appetite, provide fibres for digestion and prevent constipation. They also play an important role in neutralizing acids produced during digestion of proteinaceous and fatty foods and provides valuable roughages which help in the movement of food in intestine. On the other hand, tuber crops are rich sources of carbohydrates, energy and nutrients. No other books are available which deal with various aspects of crop productivity, physiology and post-harvest technology. In the world, many vegetables and tuber crops are grown and harvested for the supplying nutrients to mankind. This book deals with utilization, production technology, water and nutrient management, weed and pest management, disease management, physiological basis of crop productivity, abiotic stress factors affecting crop productivity and post-harvest technology of several vegetables and tuber crops. It deals with pre- and harvest technologies influencing the productivity of both world vegetables and world crops. The book contains an insight, Solanaceous vegetables, cucurbit vegetables, cole crops, leafy vegetables, root and tuber crops, bulb crops, leguminous crops and several other ones. The book will be highly useful to students and researchers working on various aspects of vegetables and tuber crops.

Book Color Mulches Influence on Growth and Yield of Strawberry Cantaloupe and Squash

Download or read book Color Mulches Influence on Growth and Yield of Strawberry Cantaloupe and Squash written by Aya Salah Sleyman and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page 102 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Studies were conducted for three growing seasons, from 1996 to 1998, to determine the effect of several color mulches on growth and yield of winter strawberry, summer cataloupe, and winter squash for the purpose of enhancing earliness. increase yield and manage insect control. Strawberry growth and yield were not affected by clear, black, black/white, and white mulches. No significant effect of the mulch color on insect infestation was observed but slightly higher number of mite nymphs was counted on strawberry leaves grown under the clear mulch. Seed germination of cantaloupe was enhanced by 3 to 4 days under the clear mulch as compared to the unmulched soil. Cantaloupe plant growth and early flowering was significantly higher under the clear mulch and consequently, increased early and total yield was obtained as compared to black, white or bare ground treatments. Cantaloupe sugar content and soil compaction were comparable under all color mulch treatments. On the other hand, black mulch promoted plant growth, flowering and early yield of squash as compared to silver, clear or bare ground treatments. Nitrate-nitrogen was significantly affected by the plastic mulches regardless of their color and higher values were always recorded under the bare ground treatment. Soil pH, EC, and P levels were not affected by mulch color.

Book A Guide to the Manufacture Performance and Potential of Plastics in Agriculture

Download or read book A Guide to the Manufacture Performance and Potential of Plastics in Agriculture written by Michael Orzolek and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2017-03-16 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The use of plastics in agriculture – to increase crop output, improve food quality and improve sustainability – has grown substantially in both quantity and the range of applications. Many of the early researchers that conducted field research in the use of plastics in agriculture have either retired or are deceased. These early pioneers in plasticulture research, the basis of plant production using plastics, were very creative and persistent in discovering uses of plastics in agricultural applications. A Guide to the Manufacture, Performance, and Potential of Plastics in Agriculture contains both references not only to their accomplishments but also their publications. The book discusses plasticulture-the basis of plant production using plastics – including topics such as plastic mulch, row covers, drip irrigation, and high/low tunnels. It covers the process of producing polyethylene and polypropylene plastics that are used in plant and animal production agriculture, and the many uses of plastics in all aspects of agriculture, including plastic greenhouses, rigid mold plastics, disposal of plastics, and plastics in animal production. This book introduces a range of academics and industrial practitioners to the impact of plastics in agriculture, both historically and in a range of current applications. It also provides new perspectives on future developments to enable further research and application. It is an invaluable reference on the use of polyethylene, polypropylene films, and such products in all aspects of agricultural production. - Discusses plasticulture, the basis of plant production using plastics, including topics such as plastic mulch, row covers, drip irrigation, and high/low tunnels - Contains 10 chapters that cover the process of producing polyethylene and polypropylene plastics that are used in agriculture - Covers the many uses of plastics in all aspects of agriculture, including plastic greenhouses, rigid mold plastics, disposal of plastics, and plastics in animal production

Book Degradable Polymers

Download or read book Degradable Polymers written by G. Scott and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Few scientific developments in recent years have captured the popular imagination like the subject of'biodegradable' plastics. The reasons for this are complex and lie deep in the human subconscious. Discarded plastics are an intrusion on the sea shore and in the countryside. The fact that nature's litter abounds in the sea and on land is acceptable because it is biodegradable - even though it may take many years to be bioassimilated into the ecosystem. Plastics litter is not seen to be biodegradable and is aesthetically unacceptable because it does not blend into the natural environment. To the environmentally aware but often scientifically naive, biodegradation is seen to be the ecologically acceptable solution to the problem of plastic packaging waste and litter and some packaging manufacturers have exploited the 'green' consumer with exaggerated claims to 'environmentally friendly' biodegradable packaging materials. The principles underlying environmental degradation are not understood even by some manufacturers of 'biodegradable' materials and the claims made for them have been categorized as 'deceptive' by USA legislative authorities. This has set back the acceptance of plastics with controlled biodegradability as part of the overall waste and litter control strategy. At the opposite end of the commercial spectrum, the polymer manufactur ing industries, through their trade associations, have been at pains to discount the role of degradable materials in waste and litter management. This negative campaign has concentrated on the supposed incompatibility of degradable plastics with aspects of waste management strategy, notably materials recycling.
