Book Influence of Single Scattering Albedo on Reflected and Transmitted Light from Clouds

Download or read book Influence of Single Scattering Albedo on Reflected and Transmitted Light from Clouds written by Plass, Gilbert N. and published by . This book was released on 1967 with total page 72 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The dependence of the reflected and transmitted light from clouds on the single scattering albedo wo is studied. The multiply scattered path of the photon in the cloud is accurately simulated by Monte Carlo techniques. When the cloud is thin and the surface albedo A = 0, the reflected and transmitted radiances vary nearly as wo for fixed angles of incidence and observation and they depend strongly on the value of A. As wo becomes small and for thick clouds, the reflected radiance approaches more closely the value calculated from the single scattering phase function. As the absorption increases the transmitted radiance at the zenith becomes larger relative to the value near the horizon. Also as the optical thickness increases, the maximum of the transmitted radiance moves from the incident direction toward the zenith. The variations in the flux and the mean optical path are also discussed. (Author).

Book Monte Carlo Calculations of Light Scattering from Clouds

Download or read book Monte Carlo Calculations of Light Scattering from Clouds written by Plass, Gilbert N. and published by . This book was released on 1967 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The scattering of visible light by clouds is calculated from an efficient Monte Carlo code which follows the multiply scattered path of the photon. The single scattering phase function is obtained from the Mie theory by integration over a particle size distribution. The photons are followed through a sufficient number of collisions and reflections from the lower surface (which may have any desired albedo) until they make a negligible contribution to the intensity. Various variance reduction techniques were used to improve the statistics. The reflected and transmitted intensity is studied as a function of solar zenith angle, optical thickness, and surface albedo. The downward flux, cloud albedo, and mean optical path of the transmitted and reflected photons are given as a function of these same parameters. The numerous small angle scatterings of the photon in the direction of the incident beam are followed accurately and produce a greater penetration into the cloud than is obtained with a more isotropic and less realistic phase function. (Author).

Book Influence of Particle Size Distribution on Reflected and Transmitted Light from Clouds

Download or read book Influence of Particle Size Distribution on Reflected and Transmitted Light from Clouds written by George W. Kattawar and published by . This book was released on 1967 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The light reflected and transmitted from clouds with various drop size distributions is calculated by a Monte Carlo technique. Six different models are used for the drop size distribution: isotropic; Rayleigh; haze continental; haze maritime; cumulus; nimbostratus. The scattering function for each model is calculated from the Mie theory. In general the reflected and transmitted radiance for the isotropic and Rayleigh models tend to be similar as are those for the various haze and cloud models. The reflected radiance is less for the haze and cloud models than for the isotropic and Rayleigh models, except for an angle of incidence near the horizon when it is larger around the incident beam direction. The transmitted radiance is always much larger for the haze and cloud models near the incident direction; at distant angles it is less for small and moderate optical thicknesses and greater for large optical thicknesses (all comparisons to isotropic and Rayleigh models). The downward flux, cloud albedo, and mean optical path are discussed. The angular spread of the beam as a function of optical thickness is shown for the nimbostratus model. (Author).

Book Short Wave Solar Radiation in the Earth s Atmosphere

Download or read book Short Wave Solar Radiation in the Earth s Atmosphere written by Irina N. Melnikova and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2005-08-29 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on data from an experiment which ran for ten years, this book summarizes the results of the Atmospheric Physics Department of the St. Petersburg University and the Main Geophysical Observatory. The processed data now forms a rich dataset of spectral values of radiative characteristics under different atmospheric conditions. The analysis of this database clearly shows that the solar radiative absorption in a dusty and cloudy atmosphere is significantly higher than assumed to date. Both graduate students of atmospheric sciences as well as scientists and researchers in the field of meteorology and climatology will find a wealth of new data and information in this monograph.
