Book Regulation of Tissue Oxygenation Second Edition

Download or read book Regulation of Tissue Oxygenation Second Edition written by Roland N. Pittman and published by Biota Publishing. This book was released on 2016-08-18 with total page 117 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This presentation describes various aspects of the regulation of tissue oxygenation, including the roles of the circulatory system, respiratory system, and blood, the carrier of oxygen within these components of the cardiorespiratory system. The respiratory system takes oxygen from the atmosphere and transports it by diffusion from the air in the alveoli to the blood flowing through the pulmonary capillaries. The cardiovascular system then moves the oxygenated blood from the heart to the microcirculation of the various organs by convection, where oxygen is released from hemoglobin in the red blood cells and moves to the parenchymal cells of each tissue by diffusion. Oxygen that has diffused into cells is then utilized in the mitochondria to produce adenosine triphosphate (ATP), the energy currency of all cells. The mitochondria are able to produce ATP until the oxygen tension or PO2 on the cell surface falls to a critical level of about 4–5 mm Hg. Thus, in order to meet the energetic needs of cells, it is important to maintain a continuous supply of oxygen to the mitochondria at or above the critical PO2 . In order to accomplish this desired outcome, the cardiorespiratory system, including the blood, must be capable of regulation to ensure survival of all tissues under a wide range of circumstances. The purpose of this presentation is to provide basic information about the operation and regulation of the cardiovascular and respiratory systems, as well as the properties of the blood and parenchymal cells, so that a fundamental understanding of the regulation of tissue oxygenation is achieved.

Book Red Cell Preservation

Download or read book Red Cell Preservation written by and published by . This book was released on 1970 with total page 616 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This bibliography covers the literature of red cell preservation and related subject areas for the period January 1, 1966 through December 31, 1969. In addition, 25 references are included which appeared in 1965. The bibliography is the result of work on a Project which consists of searching the literature, both primary and secondary, and preparing the material for transmittal each month to a number of approved recipients who are interested in blood preservation, particularly in red cell preservation by freezing. Following the response to a questionnaire sent out early during the Project, a rather broad approach to the subject was taken. Abstracts were prepared for those articles which are not accompanied by abstracts with the exception of a few references which are in Japanese only. (Author).

Book excerpt: Recognition that aging is not the accumulation of disease, but rather comprises fundamental biological processes that are amenable to experimental study, is the basis for the recent growth of experimental biogerontology. As increasingly sophisticated studies provide greater understanding of what occurs in the aging brain and how these changes occur

Book Aging in Today s Environment

Download or read book Aging in Today s Environment written by National Research Council (U.S.). Committee on Chemical Toxicity and Aging and published by National Academies. This book was released on 1987 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report examines the relationships between aging and exposure to environmental agents (including natural and man-made agents, as well as life-style factors). Several relationships must be considered--the impact of intermittent or lifelong exposure to environmental agents on the rate of aging, the impact of lifelong exposure on health status when one reaches more advanced age, and the special response of the aged compared with that of the young when exposed to environmental agents.

Book Platelets in Cardiovascular Disease

Download or read book Platelets in Cardiovascular Disease written by Deepak L. Bhatt and published by Imperial College Press. This book was released on 2008 with total page 235 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Platelets in Cardiovascular Disease provides an in-depth and current coverage of relevant platelet biology and antiplatelet therapy that is in clinical use today and potentially for the future. The book provides a succinct overview of the critical role of platelets in cardiovascular medicine. Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of mortality worldwide, and recent research has found that the platelet is central to the genesis of heart attacks and stroke as well as many of the complications of angioplasty and bypass surgery. An explosion of knowledge of the biology of platelets has established their important role in the formation of blood clots and, perhaps more intriguingly, their role as inflammatory cells. This growth in information has been paralleled by the development of several drugs that can interfere with platelet action and thereby improve patient outcomes. Indeed, several antiplatelet drugs already in development may ultimately lead to marked advances in both the treatment and prevention of cardiovascular disease. Drawing upon a panel of international experts, Platelets in Cardiovascular Disease delivers a concise yet thorough review of the major developments in antiplatelet therapy. Practicing clinicians as well as those involved in the development of new antithrombotic therapies will find the book interesting and useful. Sample Chapter(s). Book How Tobacco Smoke Causes Disease

Download or read book How Tobacco Smoke Causes Disease written by United States. Public Health Service. Office of the Surgeon General and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 728 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report considers the biological and behavioral mechanisms that may underlie the pathogenicity of tobacco smoke. Many Surgeon General's reports have considered research findings on mechanisms in assessing the biological plausibility of associations observed in epidemiologic studies. Mechanisms of disease are important because they may provide plausibility, which is one of the guideline criteria for assessing evidence on causation. This report specifically reviews the evidence on the potential mechanisms by which smoking causes diseases and considers whether a mechanism is likely to be operative in the production of human disease by tobacco smoke. This evidence is relevant to understanding how smoking causes disease, to identifying those who may be particularly susceptible, and to assessing the potential risks of tobacco products.
