It is a unique book which shows rather than tells what has and can be done by those developmentally disabled persons usually categorized as the mentally retarded.BEYOND LIMITATIONS: The Creative Art of the Mentally Retarded contains a collection of original art work done by the mentally retarded, ranging from the mildly retarded, to the severely and profoundly retarded, the autistic, and those with Down's syndrome. The art work itself - with a media range from wood and clay to crayons and felt-tipped pens - was gathered from various state training schools, special classes in public schools and community programs in ten states. Each of the 121 black and white and two color illustrations is accompanied by descriptive information with the specific disability of the artist also noted. The author has done this from a positive point of view to show that labels are not necessarily limiting. Of special interest to the reader will be the contributions from teachers who have worked closely with the handicapped. They write informally about their individual approaches, experiences and philosophy - a valuable addition to the essentially picture book format of this text.The dynamic results, spontaneity and excitement of the creative works of the mentally retarded, as shown in this book, will encourage administrators, teachers and parents to involve the retarded in creative activities. As an art collection, the book will inspire those in charge of developing programs to explore new ways of reaching the handicapped, especially through the visual arts. This book, by no means a complete representation, illustrates that there is a vast quantity of creative art just waiting to be discovered -- Book Jacket.

Children were exposed to either multiple caregivers who performed routine duties in a perfunctory manner with minimal interaction or fewer caregivers who were trained to engage in warm, responsive, and developmentally appropriate interactions during routine care. Engaged and responsive caregivers were associated with substantial improvements in child development and these findings provide a rationale for making similar improvements in other institutions, programs, and organizations.
