Book Inflation Depression and Economic Policy in the West

Download or read book Inflation Depression and Economic Policy in the West written by Anthony S. Courakis and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 1981 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Experience during the last ten years has encouraged economists to review their judgements regarding behavior and policy. The experience of the 1970s brought inflation to prominence in the minds of policymakers and academic economists, raising questions about labor markets and other supply considerations, but also resulting in an atmosphere conducive to increasing attention on monetary and financial variables. An account of some of the issues that, in this environment, occupied the thoughts of economists and conditioned the responses of policymakers in various Western countries is what this volume is about.

Book The Great Inflation

Download or read book The Great Inflation written by Michael D. Bordo and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2013-06-28 with total page 545 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Controlling inflation is among the most important objectives of economic policy. By maintaining price stability, policy makers are able to reduce uncertainty, improve price-monitoring mechanisms, and facilitate more efficient planning and allocation of resources, thereby raising productivity. This volume focuses on understanding the causes of the Great Inflation of the 1970s and ’80s, which saw rising inflation in many nations, and which propelled interest rates across the developing world into the double digits. In the decades since, the immediate cause of the period’s rise in inflation has been the subject of considerable debate. Among the areas of contention are the role of monetary policy in driving inflation and the implications this had both for policy design and for evaluating the performance of those who set the policy. Here, contributors map monetary policy from the 1960s to the present, shedding light on the ways in which the lessons of the Great Inflation were absorbed and applied to today’s global and increasingly complex economic environment.

Book excerpt: INFLATION NATION by Tom Cammack - The "War Against Deflation" will end up being an economic and financial war that none of us are likely to forget. It will be a war between currency debasement (inflation) and credit contraction (deflation). As our money fails, people will increasingly seek out precious metals and commodities as stores of value. The end result will be what the author refers to as K-Flation -- "Killer Flation" -- inflation and deflation occurring simultaneously. Inflation will occur in daily necessities such as food, water, and fuel and deflation is likely to occur in housing and financial assets such as bonds and stocks. We face confusing and chaotic times ahead. The goal of this book is to help you understand what is happening and to prepare for what is coming down the road. Foreword written by T. Britton ("Britt") Harris IV, Chief Investment Officer of the Teacher Retirement System of Texas and Member of the President's Working Group on Financial Markets.

Download or read book The Great Depression written by Lionel Robbins and published by Ludwig von Mises Institute. This book was released on 2007 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The New Deals of America and Britain were a decade-long calamity that exceeded the damage of the economic downturn itself. The theory behind the policy was all wrong, but no one can say that the correct theory was not in circulation. This splendid book by Robbins presented the entire cause and remedy - in 1934! Rothbard himself says that this book is one of two excellent studies. Sadly, the power of the state and the myth that it could dig the world out of depression prevailed over the Robbins view that the depression was the result of a previous inflation and the best cure was to free the market and let it properly correct. This book has been obscure and difficult to find for far too long. But with this new Mises Institute edition, the proof is at last available that at least one great economist in the English speaking world had it precisely right. The world would have been spared much grief had his, instead of Keynes's, views prevailed.
