Book Development of a Diagnostic Device to Predict Clinically Significant Inflammation Associated with Cardiac Surgery

Download or read book Development of a Diagnostic Device to Predict Clinically Significant Inflammation Associated with Cardiac Surgery written by Mohammed Yahya Majrashi and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Background: Cardiopulmonary bypass deployment is known to cause an inflammatory response during open heart surgery. Inflammation involves the activation of different cascades such as coagulation, the complement system and cytokines. Although the immune system is the body's key defense mechanism against external assault, it can be injurious to the patient when the immune system is over-expressed, particularly in cohort of patients that experience a heightened and uncontrolled response. This exaggerated response results in autoimmune injury and may lead to poor post-operative outcomes, such as systemic inflammatory response syndrome and multi-organ failure. Aim of the work: This project was aimed to develop a predictive screening technology that enables clinicians to specify patients who may be at risk prior to open heart surgery. This project suggests a new approach to identifying these patients, through the development of a novel technology that will measure the extent of the inflammatory response following blood contact with extracorporeal systems. This work focuses on cardiopulmonary bypass, but the technology may also extend to other treatments and interventional modalities in which tissues, in particular blood, comes into contact with foreign surfaces.

Book excerpt: This is the first textbook to focus on Aortopathy, a new clinical concept for a form of vasculopathy. The first section of the book starts from discussing general concept and history of Aortopathy, and then deals with its pathophysiology, manifestation, intrinsic factor, clinical implication, management and prevention. The second part closely looks at various disorders of the Aortopathy such as bicuspid aortic valve and coarctation of aorta. The book editors have published a lot of works on the topic and have been collecting relating data in the field of congenital heart disease for the past 20 years, thus present the book with confidence. The topic - an association of aortic pathophysiological abnormality, aortic dilation and aorto-left ventricular interaction - is getting more and more attention among cardiovascular physicians. This is the first book to refer for cardiologists, pediatric cardiologists, surgeons, ACHD specialists, etc. to acquire thorough knowledge on Aortopathy.

Book Inflammation and Atherosclerosis

Download or read book Inflammation and Atherosclerosis written by Georg Wick and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-12-03 with total page 628 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It has been known for over 150 years that hallmarks of inflammation can be observed in the wall of atherosclerotic vessels. It was, however, not clear if this inflammation is the cause or the consequence of atherogenesis. More recently, it has become evident that inflammation mediated both by innate and adaptive immunity is instrumental even in the earliest stages of the development of atherosclerotic lesions, i.e., that it plays an important pathogenetic role. In this volume, international experts in the field discuss the pathogenetic, diagnostic, preventive and possible therapeutic relevance of inflammation in atherogenesis. This book is intended for researchers and physicians in the fields of vascular biology, immunology and atherosclerosis.
