Book The Complete Dramatic Works of Tang Xianzu

Download or read book The Complete Dramatic Works of Tang Xianzu written by Tang Xianzu and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2018-02-22 with total page 1067 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tang Xianzu (1550–1616) is acclaimed as the 'Shakespeare of the East' and widely regarded as China's greatest playwright, yet his work has not reached Western readers in its entirety. The Complete Dramatic Works of Tang Xianzu represents a literary landmark: this is the first English-language collection of the revered dramatist's most important works to be made available outside China. Translated over two decades, the collection showcases the playwright's major pieces, including The Purple Flute, The Purple Hairpins, The Nanke Dream, The Handan Dream – and The Peony Pavilion. The Peony Pavilion is the playwright's most celebrated work and has drawn comparisons to Homer's Odyssey, Virgil's Aeneid, Dante's Divine Comedy and John Milton's Paradise Lost. Known for his lyrical use of metaphor, Tang Xianzu weaves the beauty of nature with the tragedy of emotion. His plays offer an extensive exploration of love, and remain at the heart of Chinese culture. This important collection represents an opportunity for a wider audience to discover the profound and poetic works of this classic playwright.

Book Roman Spain Routledge Revivals

Download or read book Roman Spain Routledge Revivals written by Leonard A. Curchin and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-08-01 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The rugged, parched landscape and fierce inhabitants of the Iberian Peninsula resisted Rome’s best generals for two centuries. Roman Spain tells the story of this conquest, making use of the latest archaeological evidence to explore the social, religious, political and economic implications of the transition from a tribal community accustomed to grisly human sacrifices to a civilised, Latin-speaking provincial society. From the fabled kingdom of Tartesos to the triumph of Christianity, Professor Curchin traces the evolution of Hispano-Roman cults, the integration of Spain into the Roman economy, cultural ‘resistance’ to Romanisation, and surveys the chief cities of the Roman administration as well as conditions in the countryside. Special emphasis is placed on social relationships: soldier and civilian, the emperor and the provincials, patrons and clients, the upper and lower classes, women and the family.

Book The Rewarde of Wickednesse

Download or read book The Rewarde of Wickednesse written by Richard Robinson and published by MHRA. This book was released on 2009 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Richard Robinson's 'The Rewarde of Wickednesse' (1574) is a quasi-epic poem that imitates the de casibus form of 'A Mirror for Magistrates' and makes a clear indication of the hellish position of the damned. Robinson wrote the poem during the period when his employer, George Talbot, was appointed as the jailer over Elizabeth's cousin Mary Stuart during the period of her imprisonment at Sheffield Castle and Sheffield Manor. The poem is anti-Catholic polemic, but it is not simply an invective against Catholicism; Robinson's work condemns bad moral behaviour but in the context of the dialectical opposition between Catholicism and Protestantism; an opposition that was not clearly demarcated during this period. Robinson's poem 'The Rewarde of Wickednesse' explores the notion that sinful people on earth are influenced by a Hellish force but he emphasises the punishment for sin and makes the link between the damned and Hell. 'The Rewarde of Wickednesse', through its inclusion of different, and sometimes opposing, traditions, faiths and literary formats, reveals an Elizabethan culture rife with the apprehensions concerning salvation and damnation that define early English Protestantism Robinson stages his laments for the sinners in the space of Hell as he and the god Morpheus travel through the underworld witnessing the punishments inflicted on sinners. Allyna E Ward is Assistant Professor of English at Booth College in Winnipeg, Canada where she works on Tudor and Early Modern Literature.
