Book PROBABILITY AND STATISTICS Volume I

Download or read book PROBABILITY AND STATISTICS Volume I written by Reinhard Viertl and published by EOLSS Publications. This book was released on 2009-06-11 with total page 410 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Probability and Statistics theme is a component of Encyclopedia of Mathematical Sciences in the global Encyclopedia of Life Support Systems (EOLSS), which is an integrated compendium of twenty one Encyclopedias. The Theme with contributions from distinguished experts in the field, discusses Probability and Statistics. Probability is a standard mathematical concept to describe stochastic uncertainty. Probability and Statistics can be considered as the two sides of a coin. They consist of methods for modeling uncertainty and measuring real phenomena. Today many important political, health, and economic decisions are based on statistics. This theme is structured in five main topics: Probability and Statistics; Probability Theory; Stochastic Processes and Random Fields; Probabilistic Models and Methods; Foundations of Statistics, which are then expanded into multiple subtopics, each as a chapter. These three volumes are aimed at the following five major target audiences: University and College students Educators, Professional practitioners, Research personnel and Policy analysts, managers, and decision makers and NGOs

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Introduction to Statistical Decision Theory: Utility Theory and Causal Analysis provides the theoretical background to approach decision theory from a statistical perspective. It covers both traditional approaches, in terms of value theory and expected utility theory, and recent developments, in terms of causal inference. The book is specifically designed to appeal to students and researchers that intend to acquire a knowledge of statistical science based on decision theory. Features Covers approaches for making decisions under certainty, risk, and uncertainty Illustrates expected utility theory and its extensions Describes approaches to elicit the utility function Reviews classical and Bayesian approaches to statistical inference based on decision theory Discusses the role of causal analysis in statistical decision theory

Book Statistical Inference as Severe Testing

Download or read book Statistical Inference as Severe Testing written by Deborah G. Mayo and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2018-09-20 with total page 503 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mounting failures of replication in social and biological sciences give a new urgency to critically appraising proposed reforms. This book pulls back the cover on disagreements between experts charged with restoring integrity to science. It denies two pervasive views of the role of probability in inference: to assign degrees of belief, and to control error rates in a long run. If statistical consumers are unaware of assumptions behind rival evidence reforms, they can't scrutinize the consequences that affect them (in personalized medicine, psychology, etc.). The book sets sail with a simple tool: if little has been done to rule out flaws in inferring a claim, then it has not passed a severe test. Many methods advocated by data experts do not stand up to severe scrutiny and are in tension with successful strategies for blocking or accounting for cherry picking and selective reporting. Through a series of excursions and exhibits, the philosophy and history of inductive inference come alive. Philosophical tools are put to work to solve problems about science and pseudoscience, induction and falsification.

Download or read book Integrated Uncertainty Management and Applications written by Van-Nam Huynh and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2010-03-26 with total page 569 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Solving practical problems often requires the integration of information and knowledge from many different sources, taking into account uncertainty and impreciseness. The 2010 International Symposium on Integrated Uncertainty Management and Applications (IUM’2010), which takes place at the Japan Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (JAIST), Ishikawa, Japan, between 9th–11th April, is therefore conceived as a forum for the discussion and exchange of research results, ideas for and experience of application among researchers and practitioners involved with all aspects of uncertainty modelling and management.

Book Fuzzy and Evidence Reasoning

Download or read book Fuzzy and Evidence Reasoning written by E.Stanley Lee and published by Physica. This book was released on 1995-11-10 with total page 380 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume gives readers a complete picture of fuzzy approximate reasoning and uncertainty reasoning based on evidence theory. The topics are systematically treated from fundamentals to advanced issues. Numerous examples illustrate the concepts. The work decribes and analyzes various approaches regarding fuzzy approximate reasoning including fuzzy logics, uncertainty representation, and fuzzy inference patterns. Approximate reasoning based on evidence theory is mainly resulted from the authors' own research work. The book can be used as a textbook for courses in uncertainty reasoning as well as a quick reference on techniques for managing uncertainty for any one working in the areas of expert systems.
