Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The situation in Europe in 1914 was electric, and war was inevitable. In the UK the British Army went through its training in the safe knowledge that it had never suffered defeat in Europe. This manual contains all that was taught to infantrymen, section commanders and many junior officers before they were sent to France When it arrived in France the British Army was a well trained and quite well equipped force, capable with the support of its Allies of fighting the Germans to a standstill, which it did in the autumn of 1914. The reason the British Army was so good is shown in this manual, for an army trained to the standards given in this manualt had to be effective. The manual covers both the drill square movements, intended to create the camaraderie and esprit de corps for which the army was famous, and a detailed section on field operations, both attack and defence. Trenches are covered (in a small way), as are machine guns. Of particular interest are the sections covering machine guns in battle, and fighting in close country, woods and villages. The manual is well illustrated with 18 plates and there is a very helpful glossary of military terms.

Excerpt from book: II GENERAL DISTRIBUTION OF TIME IN this country we cannot follow literally any of the systems of training adopted by the great military powers: our whole military system is too different. We can, however, profit by their experience and, if we translate, not the literal text of their regulations but the spirit, gain much. It is essential that any scheme of instruction adopted should be suited to our organization, method of recruitment and the various conditions surrounding our service. The work must be so planned as to utilize all the available time of the year and in that time to cover all the absolute essentials of lts, system ot instruction. In this utilization of the time training schools for non-commissioned officers and officers must be included. There is much ground to be covered during the year and unless the time be wisely apportioned it cannot be done. There is much of the work that can be done indoors; other work can only be done outside. Our troops are so widely scattered and under such varying climatic conditions that the distribution of time cannot profitably be the same for all. Each post should make its own schedule. Winter The work in each post must, however, be uniform. For example, in the northern part of summer work the United States the year's training should begin November 1st and end October 31st. All the instruction that can be given during the winter months, should be given, leaving the rest for the open season. The schools for both officers and non-commissioned officers are held during the indoor season; the work done in them should dovetail in with the general scheme of instruction. Particular care should be exercised with respect to the Schools non-commissioned officers' schools; in them the non-commissioned officers should ...

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Organization, Training, and Mobilization of Volunteers Under the Act of April 25, 1914: Prepared by the War College Division, General Staff Corps as a Supplement to the Statement of a Proper Military Policy for the United States According to the recommendations of the War College Division of the General Staff, the first line should now consist Of half a million fully trained troops, composed of the Regular Army and the reserve, which has been trained by service in the Regular Army, supported by an additional force of fully half a million citizen sol diers, prepared to take the field immediately on the outbreak of war, who should have had sufficient previous military training to enable them to meet a trained enemy within three months. At the present time the Regular Army at home could perhaps be expanded to about men by the addition of a large proportion of recruits, and there would still be required for our first line about citizen soldiers. This combined force would be insufficiently trained. The existing Organized Militia, if expanded to war strength.
