Book excerpt: The history of Sykes' Regular Infantry Division chronicles the hitherto unknown career of the Regular U.S. Infantry troops who fought in the eastern theater of the Civil War. Despite regional prejudice, recruitment difficulties, and ghastly casualties, the Regular Division formed the backbone of the Army of the Potomac, setting an enviable example for the volunteer regiments. Under the command of General George Sykes, the division figured prominently in the battles of Gaines' Mill, Second Manassas, Gettysburg, and the Wilderness. At Gettysburg half their number were casualties. By 1864, the division had been fought to near extinction, prompting their removal from the field. As professionals their service spanned the years both before and following the war, but never received the level of recognition comparable to that of the volunteer army. Appendices include tables of regimental representation by companies stating when each joined or left the division; orders of battle by companies for each engagement; Medals of Honor awarded; classification of officers; Roll of Honor; and regimental casualties by engagement.

Book excerpt: In all of the major wars of the United States from the American Revolution through the conflict in Southeast Asia the dominant combat ann of the United States Anny has been the infantry. It was natural therefore in producing an Anny Lineage Series to devote the first published volume to that arm. Appearing in 1953, the first infantry lineage book has long been out of print, and subsequent organizational developments have amply warranted a revised and enlarged edition and its publication in more durable fonn. As explained in the Preface, Infantry is now to appear in two parts, this one with Regular Army and the one to come with Army National Guard and Anny Reserve lineages and heraldic data; the historical narrative on the branch is to be included in both. In addition to the second parts of this work and of the Armor-Cavalry volume, other volumes on artillery and on divisions and separate brigades are now being prepared. The Army Lineage Series is designed to foster the esprit de corps of United States Army units, and within the Anny it is intended for use at all levels of command, in service schools, and in training programs. The short history of the infantry that precedes the lineages in this volume is an illuminating and thoroughly researched survey that should appeal to everyone interested in military history.

Book excerpt: "Recent discussions about granting direct commissions as field-grade officers (major, lieutenant colonel, and colonel) to people with highly-desirable civilian experience are often couched in terms of "that was done during World War II." Responses that such wartime commissions were temporary commissions in the Army of the United States (AUS), rather than in the Regular Army (RA), are usually met with blank looks. During World War II, almost all Army commissions--the authorization from the government that gives a military officer the right to command--were temporary AUS commissions. The AUS commission saw continued use in limited numbers after the war, but has been in hiatus since the early 1980s. The AUS commission was the last of several types of temporary commissions the United States government used to expand the Army officer corps during wartime. The use of temporary commissions to provide enough officers to lead the quickly growing ranks was the standard practice during most of the major wars fought by the United States until after the end of the Vietnam War, varying only in the type of commission and method for raising additional wartime forces. Only since 1980 has the US Army sought to wage war without issuing some sort of temporary commission to expand the officer corps"--
