Book The Foundations of the South African Cheap Labour System

Download or read book The Foundations of the South African Cheap Labour System written by Norman Levy and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2022-10-05 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1982, this was the first in-depth study of the labour system of the South African gold mining industry during the crucial years 1886 to 1906. It provided an insight into the early period but was relevant for much longer, as many of the policies decided upon in the formative years of the industry persisted. The book traces the growth of deep-level mining and covers the conflicts between miners and mine-owners . It discusses the effects on the gold mining industry of the Anglo-Boer War, and the role of the mine-owners in that conflict. It also examines the role of Chinese labour as a strategy in the defence of the labour structure and finally discusses the origins of the racially discriminatory legislation which characterized the Apartheid system.

Book Studies in the Economic History of Southern Africa

Download or read book Studies in the Economic History of Southern Africa written by Z.A. Konczacki and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-01-14 with total page 309 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First Published in 1990. Volume Two of Studies of Economic History of South Africa, looks at the Lesotho and Swaziland regions. The unfolding history and historiography of Southern Africa pose profound challenges for both analysis and praxis in the last decade of the twentieth century. These challenges are reflected in the range of investigations and contradictions, some of which are treated here, which together constitute an intellectual and political conjuncture. This collection of studies deals with the countries which were not included in the companion book on the economic history of the Front- Line States. Most of the space in the present volume is devoted to South Africa, primarily because of its importance to the region but also because contributions to the economic history of that country in English are very extensive as compared to the other states of Southern Africa.

Book The Articulation of Modes of Production

Download or read book The Articulation of Modes of Production written by Harold Wolpe and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-08-11 with total page 330 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1980, The Articulation of Modes of Production is primarily concerned with the concept of articulation of modes of production and with the analysis of a number of different social formations utilizing this concept. The emphasis is on the relationship between capitalist and other modes of production and on accounts of specific social formations which demonstrate the analytical power of the concept, but at the same time reveal a number of as yet unresolved problems. The introduction to the collection takes these problems at its starting point, and through a discussion of the theoretical literature, provides the basis for a more rigorous and complete analysis of social formations. This book will be of interest to students of economics, social policy, and history.

Book Confronting Finance

Download or read book Confronting Finance written by Nicolas Pons-Vignon and published by International Labor Office. This book was released on 2012 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The unfolding economic crisis has unequivocally proved that neoliberal policies were no better for growth than for social progress. As poverty and inequality are rising to alarming levels in Europe, the old continent seems at a loss to respond. Political leaders seem content to liquidate the social gains made by workers' struggles. A small minority, possibly even smaller than 1 per cent, associated with the financial sector, stands to benefit from a deepening of neoliberalism. This new anthology of essays from the Global Labour Column explores Europe's turmoil and challenges the deep-rooted consequences of neoliberalism in the North and the South. It sheds light on new movements and ideas which are emerging to defend and mobilise workers, and points to encouraging new policies and directions which could lay the foundations of a new order that would put decent work and life at its core. A number of these come from the South, from which the North may have much to learn. [ILO website]

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1982, this book covers the unique spatial structure of society which was South Africa under apartheid. It brings together a cohesive set of research-based contributions to the understanding of this system which was without contemporary parallels. The book considers issues such as industrial location and migrant labour at a national scale. The case studies, which are fully illustrated, deal with problems associated with work and housing for blacks, set in the 3 major metropolitan areas of Cape Town, the Witwatersrand and Durban. Of particular importance is the emphasis given to so-called ‘spontaneous’ (or ‘squatter’) settlement and to informal-sector work for blacks in the emerging apartheid city – something which links directly with central issues of development studies.

Book excerpt: As an emerging Continent, with a rich past, dynamic present and promising future, Africa has an important role to play in the develop ment of international organization. Well before Africa Year, 1960, when several African States attained their independence and their rightful place in the community of nations, the various movements for unity and co-operation strove towards the creation of regional international organization. Now more than ever before, nearly two scores of African States, members of the United Nations, the Organization of African Unity and several other sub-regional organizations and arrangements, look upon international organization as an important means for safeguard ing their independence, enhancing African identity, forging collabor ative bonds amongst themselves and with the outside world, and rais ing the standard of living for their populations. It should also be noted that the age of science and technology which is, and should be, based on international co-operation, stimulates fur ther Africa's desire to strengthen and work through international inter governmental organizations. As Africa faces the I970's, confronting the core problems of colonial ism and apartheid in its southern parts, she looks upon the United Nations and the Organization of African Unity as the main vehicles for thought and action. For these considerations, the present book resulting from the St.
