Book Canada Can Compete

Download or read book Canada Can Compete written by Joseph R. D'Cruz and published by IRPP. This book was released on 1985 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the back cover: Canada can compete in international markets, but not, the authors contend, under the present national economic strategy. Policies that redistribute income and allocate resources through government fiat have weakended Canada's ability to transform its manufacturing sector to meet the new competititve challenges. D'Cruz and Fleck compare the performance of seventy-one Canadian industries from 1967 to 1981 with industries in Japan, the United States, Britain and France. To enhance the competitiveness of Canadian manufacturing, the authors propose a differential industrial strategy, one that emphasizes growth and development. Government, they say, must play a "hands-off" role in Canada's market economy, limiting itself to establishing the rules of the game. The authors recommend, in addition, macro-economic policies that would reduce the federal deficit, restrain wages for public servants, preserve low differentials between Canadian and American interest rates, and maintain the Canadian dollar at 70 cents U.S.

Book The Drug Industry

Download or read book The Drug Industry written by Myron J. Gordon and published by James Lorimer & Company. This book was released on 1981-01-01 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this independent study, first published in 1981, economists Myron Gordon and David Fowler test the assertions made by both defenders and critics of multinational drug corporations. The pharamaceutical business in Canada is a classic example of a foreign-dominated manufacturing industry. Drug industry practices—such as the high cost of drug products, agressive marketing of drugs to doctors, inadequate testing of potentially dangerous substances, and excessive profits—have concerned both media and citizens in Canada. The Drug Industry is an analysis of a classic branch-plant business in Canada, offering recommendations for increased and closely-focussed government regulation.

Book The United States and Canada

Download or read book The United States and Canada written by Paul Wonnacott and published by Peterson Institute. This book was released on 1987 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Canada is the largest trading partner of the United States, and the two governments have begun negotiations for a free trade agreement which would tie their relationship even closer. This study analyzes the difficult problems that must be addressed in the negotiations - including quite different perceptions in the two countries of what constitutes fair trade. It suggests several possible ways of reducing differences over subsidies and countervailing duties. It also addresses the exchange rate relationship between the two dollars, and how this affects the trade outlook. An appendix by John Williamson calculated a fundamental equilibrium exhange rate for the Canadian dollar.

Book Free Trade Between the United States and Canada

Download or read book Free Trade Between the United States and Canada written by Ronald J. Wonnacott and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 1967 with total page 468 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study is the first major attempt to estimate what would happen in Canada if all trade restrictions between that country and the United States were removed. Refuting a number of generally held assumptions, the authors' findings indicate that Canadian industries would benefit substantially, provided that they seized the opportunities to reorganize for the large North American market. The authors then explore resulting general equilibrium pressures on wages and exchange and continue with an analysis of the historical effects of protection on Canada.

Book International Economics Policies and Their Theoretical Foundations

Download or read book International Economics Policies and Their Theoretical Foundations written by John M. Letiche and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2014-05-12 with total page 687 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: International Economics Policies and Their Theoretical Foundations: A Source Book provides information pertinent to the increasing differentiation of international economic policies among the developed and developing market economies. This book presents an analysis of fundamental principles of international economics. Organized into nine parts encompassing 33 chapters, this book begins with an overview of the certain elements of the relationship between the developing and the developed countries that the developing countries find particularly irksome. This text then analyzes the determinants of secular changes in the terms of trade and attempt to assess the influence of these changes on the development of a poor country. Other chapters consider the different concepts of the terms of trade, including the gross barter, income, net barter or commodity, and utility terms of trade. The final chapter deals with the economic scenarios for the 1980s. This book is a valuable resource for teachers, students, and government officials.

Book The Protective Tariff in Canada s Development

Download or read book The Protective Tariff in Canada s Development written by J.H. Dales and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 1966-12-15 with total page 213 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Canadian historians have always looks favourably on Macdonald's national policies, including the protective tariff. On the other hand, the canons of economic theory have little or nothing to say in favour of protection. Professor Dales attempts in these essays to bridge this gap between trade theory and the standard interpretation of Canadian development. In the first three essays he is concerned with relaxing the rigorous assumptions of labour and capital immobility that characterize theoretical writings on international trade in order to make them more applicable to Canada, for it must be recognized that large movements of labour and capital both into and out of the country have been one of the most important features of the Canadian economy today. The next three chapters discuss the probable historical effects of Canadian protection in the light of the modified theory. Professor Dales makes statistical comparisons between the economic development of Canada and the United States in order to identify the main differences between the patterns of economic growth in the two countries and to throw light on the large and persistent gap between the Canadian and American standards of living. The last two essays are in the nature of provocative "squibs" designed to break up some of the hard-core conventional wisdom about the Canadian economy. Although free trade versus protection has long been a dormant issue in policy discussions, it never quite disappears from the scene. Professor Dales persists in thinking that free trade—with all countries and unilaterally if necessary—is the best policy for Canada. The controversial issues raised by these essays are of the highest importance not only to historians and economists but to all in any way concerned with the public policies of this country. The book focuses our attention on a basic antinomy of Canadian life and thought that has been little recognized and by its stimulating analysis will help to form the shape of our continuing "nation-alysis."

Book Service Industries in Regional Development

Download or read book Service Industries in Regional Development written by William J. Coffey and published by IRPP. This book was released on 1989 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This document presents a broad empirical picture of the national, regional, and urban structure of the Canadian economy. It identifies the factors which may be causing the relative shift towards employment in service industries and occupations, and shows that the lack of actual data on interregional flows of service outputs effectively precludes the empirical testing of regional general equilibrium models involving service industries. It concludes by bringing forth the regional policy implications embedded in the conceptual and empirical work on service industries.

Book A Trading Nation

Download or read book A Trading Nation written by Michael Hart and published by UBC Press. This book was released on 2002 with total page 580 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Canada has always been a trading nation. From the early days of fur and fish to the present, when a remarkable 90 percent of the gross national product is attributable to exports and imports, Canadians have relied on international trade to bolster their economy. A Trading Nation, a brilliantly crafted overview and analysis of the historical foundations of modern Canadian trade policy, is the first survey to address the history of Canadian commercial policy in over 50 years. Michael Hart skillfully guides readers through more than three centuries of Canadian trade history. His engaging narrative explains how Canadians have largely come to accept that a country that derives much of its wealth from international commerce has much to gain from an open, well-ordered international economy. Close attention to trade and related economic policy choices, he argues, is crucial if Canada intends to adapt to the challenges of the new globalized economy.
