Book Alfred Weber s Theory of the Location of Industries

Download or read book Alfred Weber s Theory of the Location of Industries written by Alfred Weber and published by . This book was released on 1929 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Weber’s theory, called the location triangle, sought the optimum location for the production of a good based on the fixed locations of the market and two raw material sources, which geographically form a triangle. He sought to determine the least-cost production location within the triangle by figuring the total costs of transporting raw material from both sites to the production site and product from the production site to the market.

Book The Economics of Industrial Location

Download or read book The Economics of Industrial Location written by Philip McCann and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-09 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The motivation for this book comes from the apparent inability of existing orthodox location theory to throw light on a series of location-production problems which are typically faced by modem manufacturing and distribution ftrms. These problems are related to the treatment of time by ftrms, who normally view time costs in terms of inventory costs. From this perspective, traditional industrial location and linkage analysis can be re-cast in a form in which space time problems can be dealt with in a unifted manner. The role played by input factor prices and market prices in location behaviour becomes dependent on the relationship between the frequency of shipment and the distance of shipment. This approach provides new insights into the relationship between the optimal location of the ftrm and the value-added by the ftrm, under conditions of either ftxed or varying local factor prices. The approach can then also be extended to discuss the of the spatial changes involved in the new Just-In-Time (JIT) production question philosophy. I would like to acknowledge the many helpful discussions I have had with Bernard Fingleton, Masahisa Fujita, Geoff Hewings, John McCombie, Ron Miller, John Parr, Tony E. Smith, and my colleagues at the University of Reading. Book Industrial Location

Download or read book Industrial Location written by Michael J. Webber and published by SAGE Publications, Incorporated. This book was released on 1984-07 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Webber tackles a fundamental topic, the strategy and pattern behind the location of industrial production. He uses examples from the aircraft parts industry, the industrial decline in the UK, and the location pattern of manufacturing within cities. They suggest that as transport costs have fallen, the main location factors have become labour and agglomeration, themselves dependent upon general economic, political, and social systems.

Book excerpt: Location is vital to the efficiency and profitability of industrial activity. Industrial Location presents a comprehensive introduction to and critical review of this field of growing academic and business interest. In business, the right choices have to be made to produce profit. Industrial location is a fixed investment, crucial to the strategy and capital investment of any organization. Location also impacts upon non-investors, directly affecting employment, the environment, and economic activity in the locale. Focusing chiefly on the United States, but drawing on an international range of cases, the authors explain the economic, social and political forces which have shaped comtemporary patterns of industrialization and examines the changing nature of production and systems.

Examples of failed locations from both industry and site planners perspectives are provided. The book shows how to choose the best location in a country through arraying the basic economic and social facts in an orderly manner. Both tangible and intangible cost analysis and factor weighting are covered. Included are the impact of customs, legal systems, ways of doing business upon costs, management style and plant efficiency. Current legislation's potential impact upon plant location is evaluated. Book Industrial Location and Planning in the United Kingdom

Download or read book Industrial Location and Planning in the United Kingdom written by David Keeble and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2022-06-01 with total page 330 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1976, Industrial Location and Planning in the United Kingdom investigates in detail the nature of the changes taking place in the location of manufacturing industry since the 1950s and the reasons for them, including the effects of government regional policy and of factors such as market accessibility, labour availability and cost, transport facilities and personal residential preferences by industrialists and workers. The book brings together a wide range of published and unpublished material in discussing and evaluating explanations for regional and local manufacturing growth or decline. Government regional policy and planning is singled out for special attention, in terms of the impact of Development Area grants, of local planning controls, and of the town programmes. Manufacturing movement to new locations and the implications of government regional policies for industrial efficiency are examined in detail, together with the reasons for locational change in key but controversial industries such as steel, motor vehicles and electronics. This book will be of interest to students of urban planning, manufacturing, and development as well as city planners.
