Book Economic Development Of Taiwan Early Experiences And The Pacific Trade Triangle

Download or read book Economic Development Of Taiwan Early Experiences And The Pacific Trade Triangle written by Frank S T Hsiao and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2015-03-26 with total page 601 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Taiwan's economic growth since the 1970s has roots in its pre-war development and post-war formation of the Pacific trade triangle. By highlighting the historical perspective of the Japanese linkages and the geographic vantage point of Taiwan-Japan-USA trade triangle, Economic Development of Taiwan features a collection of papers by Frank S T Hsiao and Mei-Chu Wang Hsiao. Published mostly between 1989 and 2002, their analyses on Taiwan's pre-war and post-war early economic history debunk the myth of the country's post-war rags to riches story and revalue the myth of 'wise' government policy. Timely and accessible, this unique volume shows how early Taiwanese experiences of economic development can be valuable paradigms for emerging economies of Asian, African and Latin American countries in this age of globalization.

Book The Role of the State in Development Processes

Download or read book The Role of the State in Development Processes written by Claude Auroi and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-10-23 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First Published in 1992. Bringing together papers from analysts from every continent, edited by Claude Auroi, this collection offers insight into the state's role and the challenges in researching its development. The authors recognise the concerns among young nations focused on which type of state system would lead to an organised nation while acknowledging the two major symbols of discussion in the Western type of state and the Marxist state. They argue points of commonality and thus analyse the qualifying adjective of 'state' to suggest patterns and future discernments.

Book Technology Transfer Between the US China and Taiwan

Download or read book Technology Transfer Between the US China and Taiwan written by Douglas B. Fuller and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-06-26 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Examining the flow of technical knowledge between the US, Taiwan and Mainland China over the last sixty-five years, this book shows that the technical knowledge that has moved between these states is vast and varied. It includes the invention and production of industrial goods, as well as knowledge of the patterns of corporate organization and management. Indeed, this diversity is reflected in the process itself, which is driven both by returning expatriates with knowledge acquired overseas and by successful government intervention in acquiring technology from multinational firms. Technology Transfer Between the US, China and Taiwan engages with the evolving debates on the merits, importance and feasibility of technology transfer in the process of economic development globally, and uses the example of Taiwan to show that multinational corporations can indeed play a positive role in economic development. Further, it reveals the underlying tension between international cooperation and nationalism which inevitably accompanies international exchanges, as well as the delicate balancing act required between knowledge acquisition and dangerous levels of dependency, and the beneficial role of the US in East Asia’s technological development. With contributors from disciplines ranging from history, geography, urban planning, sociology, political science and electrical engineering, this multi-disciplinary book will be of great interest to students and scholars working across a broad range of subjects including Taiwan studies, Chinese studies, economics, business studies and development studies.

Book Legal Protection of Children Against Sexual Exploitation in Taiwan

Download or read book Legal Protection of Children Against Sexual Exploitation in Taiwan written by Amy H.L. Shee and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-05-23 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1998, this volume responds to child-prostitution being recognised as a major social problem in modern capitalist Taiwan. It is defined, both legally and socially, as a problem of ‘sexual transactions involving children and juveniles’, thus the issue of child maltreatment is submerged under other concerns. However, the main concern of this book is the protection of children from maltreatment, so related socio-legal measures will be examined by this parameter. During the social campaigns against child prostitution, structural problems such as police corruption, male sexual perversion, socio-economic inequality, and the maladjustment of aboriginal people in the modern Taiwanese society are subjugated to increasing criticism. Nevertheless, efforts to encounter any of them have had very limited accomplishment. This book intends to show that the functions of law in the prevention and treatment of the social problem of child prostitution cannot work as intended if those structural problems are not properly tackled. Suggestions are also made to address the need to reconceptualise the problem in the analytical framework of child maltreatment and to recommend the direction for reformation of policy and practice.

Book The Political Economy of the New Asian Industrialism

Download or read book The Political Economy of the New Asian Industrialism written by Frederic C. Deyo and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2018-08-06 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The newly industrializing countries (NICs) of East Asia have undergone rapid economic expansion over the past twenty vears. Unlike NICs elsewhere in the Third World, those in the Pacific basin-South Korea, Taiwan, Singapore, and Hong Kong-have managed to achieve almost full employment, a relatively egalitarian distribution of income, and the virtual elimination or poverty. In this collection of essays, nine development specialists explore the Asian NICs' exceptional ability to capitalize on the favorable economic environment of the 1960s and then to adapt flexibly to worsening conditions in the 1970s and 1980s.
