Book Competition and the World Economy

Download or read book Competition and the World Economy written by Francisco Colman Sercovich and published by Edward Elgar Publishing. This book was released on 1999 with total page 492 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Globalisation has had a major impact on manufacturing competitiveness and industrial development in transitional and developing economies. This up-to-date book critically examines the experience of a wide range of countries, focusing on the policy challenges they face in the new global economy. The rising demand for manufactured goods is causing increased pressure on developing and transitional countries to introduce policies aimed at enhancing productivity, mobilising resources, building capabilities and changing internal structures. Yet policymakers face difficult trade-offs between allocative efficiency and sustainable development. This book begins by looking at key policy issues in manufacturing including international best practices, policy convergence and policy benchmarking. The discussion then moves on to discuss the measurement of manufacturing competitiveness and the policies necessary for companies to compete successfully in the new global economy. The policy recommendations are underpinned through a wide range of case studies from different regions and countries. The book offers policymakers, scholars and researchers a unique perspective, and serves as a comprehensive guide for formulating policies vital for national industrial development and integration into the world economy. It will help those concerned with policy formulation in developing and transitional countries take informed decisions and better cope with the challenges and opportunities of the global economy.

Book Competitiveness Strategy in Developing Countries

Download or read book Competitiveness Strategy in Developing Countries written by Ganeshan Wignaraja and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2003-10-04 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Globalization and structural adjustment offer many opportunities for export orientated industrialization in developing economies. As a group, competitiveness in the developing countries has improved, but, while East Asian economies have had rapid export growth and technological upgrades, South Asian and African economies have lagged behind. Old structures, institutions, behavioural patterns and public policies are ill-adapted to deal with the challenges posed by technological change and economic liberalization. Consequently there is an urgent need for change in government and private sector attitudes and strategies. This volume seeks to generalise the lessons across developing country and enterprise cases, and sheds light on which trade and industrial strategies and instruments work best, and which do not work, in relation to manufacturing competitiveness.

Download or read book The development of services in transition economies written by Carolin Wobben and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2004-01-13 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2003 in the subject Business economics - General, grade: NN, Hamburg University of Ecomomy and Policy (-), course: Human Development, language: English, abstract: It is by now more than a decade ago that the formally centrally planned economies in Central and Eastern Europe have started to transform into market economies when the collapse of the Soviet system was confirmed in 1989. In fact, they constitute a unique historical example with a large set of economies undergoing this extremely drastic systemic change within a very short period of time. The adoption of a new model based on free market economy supports the rebuilding of one Europe which will benefit from high economic and social growth potential as well as political stability and security. One essential characteristic of a free market economy is a high proportion of services. Realizing this quality in the transition economies signifies a great challenge as their service sector was extremely underdeveloped in the planned economies. In this paper, the development of the service sector in the transition economies of Central and Eastern Europe are depicted on the background of the economic characteristics of their socialist past. In this portrayal, both domestic growth and international trade of services will be accounted for. Finally, it will be discussed in which way the service sector represents a strong impetus in the fight against unemployment and hence contributes to a sustainable development in the future.
