Book Industrial Craft in Australia

Download or read book Industrial Craft in Australia written by Jesse Adams Stein and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-01-04 with total page 263 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the first of its kind to investigate the ongoing significance of industrial craft in deindustrialising places such as Australia. Providing an alternative to the nostalgic trope of the redundant factory ‘craftsman’, this book introduces the intriguing and little-known trade of engineering patternmaking, where objects are brought to life through the handmade ‘originals’ required for mass production. Drawing on oral histories collected by the author, this book highlights the experiences of industrial craftspeople in Australian manufacturing, as they navigate precarious employment, retraining, gendered career pathways, creative expression and technological change. The book argues that digital fabrication technologies may modify or transform industrial craft, but should not obliterate it. Industrial craft is about more than the rudimentary production of everyday objects: it is about human creativity, material knowledge and meaningful work, and it will be key to human survival in the troubled times ahead.

This book was released on 2017-11-16 with total page 492 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Employment, Labour and Industrial Law in Australia provides a comprehensive, current and accessible resource for the undergraduate and Juris Doctor student. With a social and political background to the law, this text provides insightful legal analysis underscored by practical business experience, while exploring key principles through a close evaluation of laws and lively discussion of prominent cases. Recognising the multi-faceted nature of the subject, the authors have included content on employment, labour and industrial law in the one text, while also presenting critical topics not often dealt with, namely: • current and in-depth analysis of trade union regulation • public work including the public sector, the judiciary and academics • workplace health and safety including worker's compensation, bullying, anti-discrimination and taxation • emerging issues including topics such as transnational and international employment law, migration and employment, as well as volunteers and work experience. To maintain currency within this rapidly changing area of law, the text has a website which will include updates for any major developments in the field as well as responses to end-of-chapter questions. Written by respected academics and practicing lawyers in the field, this book is a relevant and contemporary guide to this fascinating area of law.

Book Ebbing Opportunity Australia and the US National Technology and Industrial Base

Download or read book Ebbing Opportunity Australia and the US National Technology and Industrial Base written by Brendan Thomas-Noone and published by United States Studies Centre at the University of Sydney. This book was released on 2019-11-25 with total page 23 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The United States’ National Technology and Industrial Base (NTIB) is a congressionally-mandated policy framework that is intended to foster a defence free-trade area among the defence-related research and development sectors of the United States, Canada, Australia and the United Kingdom. To date, however, the NTIB has only managed to facilitate limited bilateral cooperation between some members, falling well short of its goal. The US defence export control regime is one of the biggest barriers to NTIB integration. Specifically, bureaucratic fragmentation, its failure to treat trusted allies differently from other partners and its leaders’ reluctance to attempt politically costly reform are significant barriers to progress. Canberra’s ability to maintain its own competitive military advantage and to serve as an effective ally of the United States in the Indo-Pacific is threatened by real and growing opportunity costs in an age of rapid strategic and technological change that Australia and Australian industry face as a result of slow NTIB implementation. Australian leaders should elevate NTIB progress to the political level and accelerate efforts to make a strategic case in Washington as to why extensive and ambitious implementation of NTIB’s original vision is urgently needed.
