Book excerpt: Excerpt from Industrial-Commercial Geography of the United States This book is not a technical treatise upon the indus tries discussed, but simply an attempt to describe, in a clear and simple way, some of the every - day features, as well as some of the unusual things, that belong to these industries. I have attempted to keep constantly in view the human elements of the stories. At the same time, the leading thought has been to emphasize the importance of these activities, as carried on in the United States. The student is free to investigate their existence in other countries should he desire to do so. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Download or read book Commercial and Industrial Geography a Text Book for Schools Colleges and Private Reference Classic Reprint written by John James MacFarlane and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-09 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Commercial and Industrial Geography a d104 Book for Schools, Colleges, and Private Reference The rapid expansion of the foreign trade and the increasing domestic commerce of the United States have made it necessary for the business man to inform himself as to the kind, quantity and value of the various natural and manufactured products that are bought and sold in the markets of the world. It is also desirable for him to know why certain countries have controlled certain lines of trade in the past and whether present conditions are such that he may compete successfully in the world's neutral markets. The author is daily called upon to answer questions coming from students, teachers and business men bearing upon such topics touching the industry and commerce of the world. In the preparation of this book it is assumed that the student already has a fair knowledge of political and physical geography. Commodities are first treated separately following the classification given in the United States Government reports. The processes of manufacture of some of the more important articles are incidentally given in order to aid in understanding any peculiarities in them affecting the course of trade. The countries in each continent are next considered in the order of their importance to the trade of the United States. The physical and other conditions affecting trade are also considered as well as the weights and measures, the currency, and the languages in use in each country. Trade routes, government revenues, aids to commerce, instruments of exchange, and the metric system, and their effect upon commerce are treated in separate chapters. Statistics are used only to the extent necessary to show the relative importance of the various commodities and different countries engaged in the world's trade. For United States imports and exports those of the fiscal years ending June 30 are given, as these are the only periods for which complete statistics are published. Book New Complete Geography Classic Reprint

Download or read book New Complete Geography Classic Reprint written by Matthew Fontaine Maury and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-27 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from New Complete Geography We have decided to teach these features objectively on a plan that has been highly commended. For instance. Instead of devoting two or three pages of text to the origin of mountains. A subject in which the average child takes no interest, we give in the general presentation of the physical geography of the earth four pictures of mountains, and under each picture give a brief description of the origin and character of the formation. The same course has been followed with reference to other physical features. The pupil will read these descriptions because of his interest in the picture, and will remember them for life because of their association with it. Commercial and Industrial Geography. - A leading feature of this book is the treatment of industrial and commercial geography. In actual life, it is a knowledge of the countries of the earth, and of the people who inhabit them, of their resources and industries, their cities and commercial relations, that one needs for practical business purposes, or even for an intelligent appreciation of the contents of the daily newspapers. Industrial Illustrations. - In carrying out this plan we have been engaged for three years past in collecting from all parts of the world industrial pictures - photographs showing machinery in actual operation, and under these we have placed descriptions which give in a few words a clear idea of the process of manufacture. We have distributed these throughout the book in such a way as to identify each industry with some state or country where it is especially prominent. We believe that this plan will awaken present interest and prove of permanent value. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Lakes, but, since the navigation of the St. Lawrence River has been improved, with all the rest of the world. In the matter of railroad advantages no other city surpasses Chicago. For these reasons the flour which is made there is easily marketed. Kansas. Kansas is profiting much from the westward movement of wheat raising and manufacturing. Between 1900 and 1905 its milling industry almost doubled, and in the latter year ranked second among the industries of the state in the value of its product. The mills are not concentrated in any one city or in any one part of the state, but there are a number of important centers, such as Atchison, Leavenworth, Topeka, and Wichita. Missouri. Missouri is also becoming an important flour-milling state, having come up from sixth place in 1900 to third place in 1905. Here, too, flour milling is the second industry in importance, coming next to slaughtering and meat packing. St. Louis, its chief city, has long been recognized as a center of trade because of its position on the Mississippi, and to-day its railway facilities are even greater than the advantages offered by that great waterway. Missouri's success illustrates the fact that it is cheaper to manufacture wheat in or near the wheat belt, and to send the flour, rather than the raw product, to market. Marketing The business of marketing the products manufactured from wheat, such as flour and stock feed, the former being the more important, has come to be a large one, and is greatly helped by our rapid and cheap transportation system. There was a time when each state produced nearly enough wheat to feed its own population; but through division of labor and specialization, various industries have come to be centered in the places best suited to...

Download or read book Handbook of Commercial Geography Classic Reprint written by George Goudie Chisholm and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-31 with total page 872 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Handbook of Commercial Geography Preparations for a ninth edition were begun in 1913, and were nearly completed when the war broke out. This expression, the war, ' n'ow recurs again and again in the text, and one can only hope that the war referred to will prove to be such an unmistakable epoch in history as to leave no doubt as to what war is meant. When war was declared, both the publishers and I agreed that it would be altogether inopportune to publish a work of the scope of the present when the geography of almost the entire world was about to be upset. Publication was accordingly postponed till after the conclusion of the principal peace treaties. All the time, however, preparations for the new edition were going on, and the work now appears in a form more completely recast than any previous edition. The resetting of the entire book and the re numbering of the paragraphs have allowed of interpolations and rear rangements of matter on a much greater scale than ever before. The introductory matter of the fourth and eighth editions has been put in its proper place in the text, and subjects that seemed to me to require further elucidation have been dealt with at greater length. Such additions are scattered throughout the book, but the principal additions are under Climate (with new illustrative maps), Commercial and Industrial Towns, Coal, and The British Isles. It is this last section that has been most considerably extended, but not so much by the addition of new matter as by the incorporation of matter previously in one or other of the introductions. Notwithstanding the delay in publication, the work is still issued to an unsettled world, and one of which the settlement on a basis allowing of a new period of orderly evolution seems still remote. Comparisons under the head of value between pre-war and post-war conditions seem to me to be hardly ever possible, and for that reason no average values are given in this edition for periods subsequent to 1913, or the fiscal year 1913 - 14, where the fiscal does not correspond with the calendar year. International values have of course a meaning in individual transactions, but in present conditions I can attach no meaning to average values for any period comparable with those of pre-war periods, and therefore I do not choose to encumber my pages with data of which I cannot myself discern the use. It is doubtful, indeed, whether we shall ever be able to get such figures. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
