Download or read book Where Shrimp Eat Better than People written by Wilma Dunaway and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2022-10-31 with total page 459 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: East, South and Southeast Asia are home to two-thirds of the world’s hungry people, but they produce more than three-quarters of the world’s fish and nearly half of other foods. Through integration into the world food system, these Asian fisheries export their most nutritious foods and import less healthy substitutes. Worldwide, their exports sell cheap because women, the hungriest Asians, provide unpaid subsidies to production processes. In the 21st century, Asian peasants produce more than 60 percent of the regional food supply, but their survival is threatened by hunger, public depeasantization policies, climate change, land grabbing, urbanization and debt bondage. *Where Shrimp Eat Better than People: Globalized Fisheries, Nutritional Unequal Exchange and Asian Hunger is now available in paperback for individual customers.

Book While Stocks Last

Download or read book While Stocks Last written by Yvonne Sadovy and published by Adb Pacific Studies. This book was released on 2003 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study brings together the work of many researchers to arrive at suggestions for solving the environmental problems caused by the long-running live-fish trade in Southeast Asia. With strong demand coming from mainland China, this trade has caused rampant over-fishing in Asia and consequent damage to outside subsistence or commercial fisheries. This work discusses the role of regional organizations in regulating the trade as well as ways to decrease nontarget fish mortality in an industry that often employs cyanide solution as a fishing tool.

Book excerpt: The seemingly inexhaustible oceans have proved to be finite after all. Capture of wild fish have leveled off since the mid-1980s, and many stocks of fish are fished so heavily that their future is threatened. And yet the world's appetite for fish has continued to increase, particularly as urban populations and incomes grow in developing countries. Aquaculture--fish farming--has arrived to meet this increased demand. Production of fish from aquaculture has exploded in the past 20 years and continues to expand around the world. But will aquaculture be sufficient to provide affordable fish to the world over the next 20 years? And what environmental and poverty problems will aquaculture face as it expands? Using a state-of-the-art computer model of global supply and demand for food and feed commodities, this book projects the likely changes in the fisheries sector over the next two decades. As prices for most food commodities fall, fish prices are expected to rise, reflecting demand for fish that outpaces the ability of the world to supply it. The model shows that developing countries will consume and produce a much greater share of the world's fish in the future, and trade in fisheries commodities will also increase. The authors show the causes and implications of these and other changes, and argue for specific actions and policies that can improve outcomes for the poor and for the environment.

Book Taiwanese Distant Water Fisheries in Southeast Asia 1936 1977

Download or read book Taiwanese Distant Water Fisheries in Southeast Asia 1936 1977 written by Henry T. Chen and published by Liverpool University Press. This book was released on 2017-10-18 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study provides a detailed study of the fishing nation of Taiwan at a regional and local level in order to address the lack of academic research into the Taiwanese fishing industry in comparison to other nations. Over three stages of analysis it identifies the reasons for the rise and decline of Taiwanese distant-water fisheries. The first stage examines the broader historical background, government policy, and birth of the Taiwanese fishing industry. The second explores the industry at a national level, analysing the relationships between fishing, government, military, and ancillary industries. The third approach narrows the scope to individual fishing communities and explores the working lives and cultural habits of the fishermen. The major focus is the port of Kaohsiung and how it became the major supply base for the fishing industry. It explores Taiwan’s relationship with Japan and the postwar decline due to Japan’s losses in the Second World War. Finally, it considers the development of Taiwanese colonial and postwar fishing policies. It concludes that modern fishing techniques were introduced from Japan, and emboldened Taiwanese fisherman to risk entering remote and foreign waters. The author suggests that further research into Taiwan take would help scholars better understand the history of distant-fisheries. The journal consists of nine chapters, an introduction and conclusion, a list of interviewees, and a bibliography of English and Chinese-language sources.
