Download or read book The Social Costs of Industrial Growth in Northern Mexico written by Kathryn Kopinak and published by Center for U.S.-Mexican Studies University of Cali. This book was released on 2004 with total page 404 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The foreign export-processing industry is a global phenomenon, with factories known as maquiladoras in Mexico and Central America. While maquiladoras have gone through second- and third-generation production models, with corresponding research literature from business perspectives, the social analyses of these models and 'Mature Maquilization's' effects on health, the environment, infrastructure, and gender inequalities have not yet been adequately addressed. Kathryn Kopinak's fine edited collection is a long-overdue, welcome addition to this gap in the literature. Drawing together a distinguished and committed group of scholars from North America, The Social Costs of Industrial Growth in Mexico provides careful and methodical knowledge on extensive third-generation social costs, with few benefits for workers' abilities to live healthy lives in which they enjoy fruits of their hard labor.

Download or read book Peruvian Nationalism written by David Chaplin and published by Transaction Publishers. This book was released on 1976-01-01 with total page 508 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Peru is the most interesting model of justice and development in Latin America today. To analyze the sociopolitical progress of this nation, David Chaplin has gathered together and edited this interdisciplinary collection of essays. Peru's development is unique for several reasons. First, it has shown that a military force that was trained largely by the United States can employ its professional expertise not to remain a well-behaved ally but to pull off a genuinely radical nationalist revolution even at the expense of various interests of its "benefactor." Second, Peru has proven that successful economic development need be neither capitalist nor Social-ist. Peruvian Nationalism contains major papers by leading Peruvianists on the 1960s and on the current revolutionary military regime. The temporal focus is on the current (post-1968) revolutionary military government, with background material covering the early 1960s. Contributors are all social scientists -- including American, Italian and Peruvian writers -- who have carried outfield research in Peru. The primary focus of this volume is the radical change being carried out by the current military structure. Relevant background topics include: Peru's sociopolitical structure during the 1960s, especially under the Belaunde regime, with particular attention to peasant movements and agrarian reform; a reassessment of the pre-1968 golpe (coup de'etat) behavior of former military governments; an analysis of the uniquely radical ideology and concrete reforms of the current military government. This social science reader on Peru is a scholarly as well as sympathetic treatment of Peru's national and local politics, social structure, agrarian and tax reform and peasant movements. The editor has provided an extensive introduction and index and has also included a thorough bibliography of publications on Peru since 1960.

Download or read book Industrial Restructuring written by N. Mathieu and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 1996-01-01 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: World Bank Discussion Paper No. 320. Provides separate estimates of the influence of borrowing by both men and women, through three credit programs, on a variety of household and individual outcomes, including school enrollment, labor supply, the asset holdings of women, recent fertility and use of contraceptives, consumption, and the anthropometric status of children. The findings show that credit provided to women is more likely to influence these behaviors than credit provided to men and has a significant effect on the well-being of poor households in Bangladesh.
Download or read book The Peruvian Industrial Labor Force written by David Chaplin and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2015-12-08 with total page 343 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a sociological analysis of change and mobility in the labor force of thirteen of the largest textile factories in Peru. The book explores demographic and social variables such as age, sex, birthplace, migration, seniority, current and former occupations, and employment status as possible indices of rationality in the Peruvian labor market. There are two especially striking empirical findings: the Peruvian textile industry has not been plagued by the high levels of labor turnover generally assumed to be inevitable in underdeveloped countries; since 1955 women are being shut out of better-paying manufacturing jobs because of welfare laws that make them more expensive to employ than men. Download or read book Chile s Salmon Industry written by Akio Hosono and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-04-15 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the first to analyze Chile’s salmon farming industry in discussing industrial development in terms of the management of public goods. The book highlights important aspects of learning and capacity development, environmental sustainability, institutions, and social welfare or inclusiveness. With aquaculture now providing almost half the global fish harvest, Chile’s salmon farming and processing industry stands out as a leader in the new “blue revolution”. Taking a holistic, historic approach to understanding the evolutionary development of the industry, the authors employ this strategy in the belief that policy discussions of economic activities have become highly segmented and often provide only a partial picture. Such segmentation is problematic for policy studies based on a complex web of interactions among numerous agents. The present volume untangles this web by considering the development of the Chilean salmon industry not only in holistic and historic terms but also from a socioeconomic point of view. The valuable book offers insightful lessons that can be applied to other natural resource-based sectors facing similar challenges in the course of development. Download or read book Region and Nation written by James Brennan and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-04-30 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study of twentieth-century Argentine history is undergoing a radical transformation. Both Argentine and U.S. historians of Argentina are recasting the great debates in the historiography by challenging the Buenos Aires-centered focus of most of the existing historical scholarship and offering a new perspective on the country's modern history. Argentina's supposed 'exceptionalism' is being challenged by these historians. The persistence of political clientilism and oligarchic rule, enclave economies and pre-capitalist social relations, the role of traditional institutions such as the Church and family, intense class conflict and working class militancy, all approximate Argentina closer to the Latin American experience than the previous historiography would suggest. This book is a unique collaboration between Argentine and U.S. historians of this 'other Argentina.'

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ESTE LIBRO EXPLICA CON PROSA CLARA CÓMO SE LEGITIMA HOY EL ORDEN SOCIAL Y ARROJA UNA MIRADA INNOVADORA PARA ENTENDER LAS IDEOLOGÍAS EN LA SOCIEDAD ACTUAL.

Download or read book Communities in Globalization written by Juan Pablo Pérez Sáinz and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2003 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is a silent globalization being carried out far below the action of multinational firms, international organizations, and state policies. It is the work of societies--communities of determined and creative people. Communities in Globalization richly illustrates the experiences of three Central American communities connected with global markets. The unique perspective of each is developed to show the economic, political-institutional, and social effects of its connection with world trade. Ultimately, this book seeks to identify the resources that allow a community to face globalization while minimizing risks and maximizing opportunities.
Download or read book El tiempo construye written by Equipoarquitect (EQA) and published by Editorial GG. This book was released on 2013-02-23 with total page 161 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.
