Book excerpt: This thesis deals with topological orders from two different perspectives: from a condensed matter point of view, where topological orders are considered as breakthrough phases of matter; and from the emerging realm of quantum computation, where topological quantum codes are considered the most appealing platform against decoherence. The thesis reports remarkable studies from both sides. It thoroughly investigates a topological order called the double semion model, a counterpart of the Kitaev model but exhibiting richer quasiparticles as excitations. A new model for symmetry enriched topological order is constructed, which adds an onsite global symmetry to the double semion model. Using this topological phase, a new example of topological code is developed, the semion code, which is non-CSS, additive, non-Pauli and within the stabiliser formalism. Furthermore, the thesis analyses the Rashba spin-orbit coupling within topological insulators, turning the helical edge states into generic edges modes with potential application in spinstronics. New types of topological superconductors are proposed and the novel properties of the correspondingly created Majorana fermions are investigated. These Majorana fermions have inherent properties enabling braiding and the performance of logical gates as fundamental blocks for a universsal quantum computator.

Book excerpt: This book explores the relationship between electronic correlations, dimensionality, inhomogeneities, and superconductivity in low-dimensional systems by studying single crystals of the quasi-one-dimensional Na2–δMo6Se6, composed of MoSe filaments weakly coupled by Na atoms and subject to intrinsic disorder (δ > 0). It shows that the Na2-δMo6Se6 displays strong electronic correlations in its normal state, whereas a superconducting ground state emerges from Anderson localized electrons. Two novel behaviors of the superconducting state are observed: first, a disorder induced enhancement of the superconducting transition temperature; second, a reentrant phase coherence with increasing temperature, magnetic field, and current. It also analyzes the intrinsic properties of Na2-δMo6Se6 are analyzed to offer a thorough understanding of these phenomena. The emergence of superconductivity in such low-dimensional systems provides a fruitful playground to explore electronic order and correlations.

Book excerpt: Since the discovery of the conducting two dimensional electron gas (2DEG) at the interface of insulating oxide materials LaAlO3 and SrTiO3 in 2004, this system has shown a vast diversity of physical properties including superconductivity, ferromagnetism and field induced metal-insulator phase transitions. In this dissertation we discuss three advances by our collaboration that bolster applicability of this interfacial system. In an all thin-film LaAlO3/SrTiO3 system we identified two different conduction regimes, where the effect of oxygen partial pressure during growth directly affects the carrier density of the system. In the lower carrier density regime (8́ơ 1013 cm-2) we found a metallic to insulating temperature dependence and strong localization by disorder, whereas in the higher regime (> 1014 cm-2) we find metallic dependence with signs of weak localization. This is understood in the occupation of Ti 3d bands farther from the interface as carrier density is increased. Our work in the electronic properties of all-thin-film LaAlO3/SrTiO3 pioneers the understanding and implementations of this 2DEG to harness the richness of this oxide interface and its integration to industry standard substrates. Furthermore, we showed the first conducting LaAlO3/SrTiO3 two-dimensional system grown by the physical vapor deposition technique: 90 & deg off-axis sputtering. Films grown with this scalable technique have excellent crystalline quality and transport characteristics similar to those grown by (mostly research employed) pulsed laser deposition. Writing of circuits on the nanoscale using conducting-tip atomic force microscopy is demonstrated in sputtered LaAlO3 on SrTiO3, opening the doors to nanoelectronic application of this novel interfacial system. Moreover, we are among the first groups in the world to demonstrate conducting [111]-oriented LaAlO3/SrTiO3 heterostructures, a crystallographic orientation that proves to be challenging due to the large polar nature of perovskite oxides in this stacking direction. An interplay between structural and electronic reconstructions is at work to resolve the polarization divergence. This drives the LaAlO3/SrTiO3 (111) system from insulating to conducting with increasing LaAlO3 thickness, displaying a broader transition than the conventional (001) system and a similar n-type 2DEG.

Unbiased numerical calculations within two-dimensional Hubbard models have found no evidence for long-range superconducting order. Most of the two-dimensional theories suggest that the superconducting state can be obtained by destabilizing an antiferromagnetic or spin-liquid insulating state. An antiferromagnet is a half-filled system because each site has one electron or hole. However, in anisotropic triangular lattices, numerical calculation finds pairing enhancement at quarter-filling but no long-range superconducting order. Many organic superconductors are dimerized in nature. Such a dimer lattice is effectively half-filled because each dimer has one electron or hole. Some theories suggest that magnetic fluctuation in such a system can give superconductivity. However, at zero temperature, we performed density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) calculations in such a system, and we find no superconducting long-range order. We also find that the antiferromagnetic order is not necessary to get a superconducting state. Failure in explaining superconductivity in two-dimensional systems suggests that only repulsive interactions between electrons are not sufficient, and other interactions are required. The most likely candidate is the electron-phonon interaction. However, existing theories of superconductivity emphasize either electron-electron or electron-phonon interactions, each of which tends to cancel the effect of the other. We present direct evidence from quantum Monte Carlo calculations of cooperative, as opposed to competing, effects of electron-electron and electron-phonon interactions within the frustrated Hubbard Hamiltonian, uniquely at the band-filling of one-quarter. Bond-coupled phonons and the onsite Hubbard U cooperatively reinforce d-wave superconducting pair-pair correlations at this filling while competing with one another at all other densities. Our work further gives new insight into how intertwined charge-order and superconductivity appear in real materials.
