However, instruction continues to be a once-size-fits-all approach, in which all students are given the same materials to read. The purpose of this project is to develop and incorporate a guided reading instructional unit at the middle school level in order to improve literacy and to allow all students to be reading materials at levels appropriate to their needs. Through the use of the Group Reading and Diagnostic Evaluation, students were tested in the fall in order to identify what specific grade levels they were reading at. Through the use of the fall scores, students were placed in reading groups in which they were reading a text appropriate to their individual reading levels. Students were introduced to particular reading strategies and/or skills each day, and used their leveled text as a guide to utilize these particular strategies. In spring, the students were tested once again in order to determine if students made gains in their grade level equivalency. As a whole, class averages and individual student grade level equivalencies improved as a result of the unit. Teachers were instructed through an in-service on how to incorporate this unit and instructional approach in their own classrooms and have begun to embrace it. It is my hope that my project will serve as a model and that other educators will realize the benefits of the guided reading approach.
