Book The Individualist Anarchists

Download or read book The Individualist Anarchists written by Frank H. Brooks and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-28 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Among the political ideologies generally considered to be of continuing significance, anarchism alone has never been implemented. Perhaps its rigors are too strong and its advocates are too weak. That it is still considered worth studying is testimony to its intellectual credibility, particularly its single-minded emphasis on individual liberty. Obsession with liberty and skepticism of government are as alive today as they were in the nineteenth century. This book offers a comprehensive introduction to anarchism in the United States, revealing its historical roots and relevance to today's problems. The relationship between anarchy and individualism in the nineteenth century is well known. How this affected the larger system is what the bulk of the anthology is about.Liberty was a magazine featuring some of the outstanding anarchist thinkers in America at the turn of the century. This anthology offers a selection of writings spanning the magazine's twenty-seven year life and features some of its major writers: Benjamin Tucker, Victor Yarros, Steven Byington, John Beverley Robinson, and Gertrude Kelly. The chapters are divided into four sections: political theory, economic theories and reforms, social implications, and strategies of individualist anarchism. The authors criticize censorship, state support of patriarchal marriage, and the general invasion of privacy. Though quite radical, the writers were not revolutionaries in a conventional sense; they emphasized passive resistance, rather than violent assault, as proper. The Individualist Anarchists is not merely of historical Interest, but offers a fundamental critique of government and authority - one that remains a relevant part of today's libertarian movement. It will be of Interest to political theorists, economists, sociologists, and scholars of American history; above all, to those who may not yet have appreciated the worth of an analysis made so many years ago.

Book I Belong Only to Myself

Download or read book I Belong Only to Myself written by Andrea Pakieser and published by AK Press. This book was released on 2014-12-01 with total page 155 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Leda Rafanelli was one of the most prolific propagandists in early twentieth-century Italy. A comrade of Benito Mussolini before he turned fascist, she converted to anarchism and Islam at the age of twenty, a combination characteristic of her iconoclastic approach to life and politics. Weaving excerpts from Rafanelli's novels, poems, and essays with extensive biographical research, this book tells the story of the insurrections accompanying the birth of the Italian nation, the evolution of the anarchist movement, struggles for alternatives to bourgeois feminism, and the dangers faced by those opposing global war and fascism. Andrea Pakieser is a writer and translator currently at the University of Paris.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “‘Whoever denies authority and fights against it is an anarchist,’ said Sebastien Faure. The definition is tempting in its simplicity, but simplicity is the first thing to guard against in writing a history of anarchism. Few doctrines or movements have been so confusedly understood in the public mind, and few have presented in their own variety of approach and action so much excuse for confusion.” These are the opening sentences of this book, which brilliantly effaces confusion by providing a critical history of anarchist thought and practice. Mr. Woodcock traces the development of anarchism from its earliest appearances, and the rise and fall of anarchism as a movement aiming at practical social changes during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. He discusses the ideas of the principal anarchist thinkers—Godwin, Proudhon, Bakunin, Kropotkin, Tolstoy, among others—and explains the various forms—anarchist individualism, anarchist communism, anarcho-syndicalism—that anarchist proposals for change have taken. The development of anarchist organizations, the various forms (peaceful and violent) of anarchist political action in Europe and America, the reasons for the appeal of anarchism at certain periods and to certain people—all these are given full treatment in Mr. Woodcock’s comprehensive work, which closes with a discussion of the causes of anarchism’s failure as a movement and with a consideration of whether there are any elements in anarchist thought that—despite the failure of anarchism as a political panacea—may still be worth preserving in the modern world. “The essential introduction to the classical anarchist thinkers.”—Mark Leier, Director, Centre for Labour Studies, Simon Fraser University

Book The American as Anarchist

Download or read book The American as Anarchist written by David DeLeon and published by JHU Press. This book was released on 2019-12-01 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1978. When compared with socialist and communist systems in other nations, the impact of radicalism on American society seems almost nonexistent. David DeLeon challenges this position, however, by presenting a historical and theoretical perspective for understanding the scope and significance of dissent in America. From Anne Hutchinson in colonial New England to the New Left of the 1960s, DeLeon underscores a tradition of radical protest that has endured in American history—a tradition of native anarchism that is fundamentally different from the radicalism of Europe, the Soviet Union, or nations of the Third World. DeLeon shows that a profound resistance to authority lies at the very heart of the American value system. The first part of the book examines how Protestant belief, capitalism, and even the American landscape itself contributed to the unique character of American dissent. DeLeon then looks at the actions and ideologies of all major forms of American radicalism, both individualists and communitarians, from laissez-faire liberals to anarcho-capitalists, from advocates of community control to syndicalists. In the book's final part, DeLeon argues against measuring the American experience by the standards of communism and other political systems. Instead he contends that American culture is far more radical than that of any socialist state and the implications of American radicalism are far more revolutionary than forms of Marxism-Leninism.

Book Anarchist Economics

Download or read book Anarchist Economics written by Fouad Sabry and published by One Billion Knowledgeable. This book was released on 2024-01-13 with total page 378 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is Anarchist Economics When it comes to economic activity, anarchist economics refers to the collection of theories and activities that are associated with the political theory of anarchism. It is common practice to refer to anarchism as a sort of libertarian socialism, which is a stateless form of socialism. A significant number of anarchists are anti-authoritarian and anti-capitalist. Personal property is something that anarchists believe in and support. They are opposed to capital concentration, interest, monopoly, and private ownership of productive property, which includes the means of production, profit, rent, usury, and wage slavery. These are all components that are considered to be intrinsic to capitalism.
