Book Harnessing Markets for Biodiversity

Download or read book Harnessing Markets for Biodiversity written by Dan Biller and published by OECD. This book was released on 2003-06-04 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Governments and the business sector are increasingly recognising the potential of biodiversity products and services; markets which can help to promote the sustainable use and conservation of biodiversity. Some are already being profitably marketed, but private markets also need to be supported by appropriate public policies. This publication provides a conceptual framework to help identify and promote the use of markets in the biodiversity policy arena, and draws on the findings of a joint OECD/World Bank workshop held in Paris in January 2001. It discusses the concept of 'public goods' and considers four examples of emerging markets: organic agriculture; sustainable forestry; non-timber forest products, such as natural cosmetics and herbal medicines; and genetic resources.

Book Marine Protected Areas

Download or read book Marine Protected Areas written by OECD. and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Intense exploitation of our oceans and seas is degrading marine biodiversity and ecosystems at an alarming rate. This report presents good practice insights for effectively managing marine protected areas (MPAs), one of the policy instruments available for the conservation and sustainable use of marine biodiversity and ecosystems. While global coverage of MPAs has been increasing over the past two decades, further efforts are required to meet the target under the Sustainable Development Goals and to ensure they are effective. Drawing on the literature and numerous examples from developed and developing countries, this book highlights how the environmental and cost effectiveness of MPAs can be enhanced. It covers issues including the benefits and costs of MPAs, the need for more strategic siting of MPAs, monitoring and compliance, sustainable finance for MPAs, and the need to embed these in a wider policy mix so as to address the multiple pressures on marine ecosystems.

Book Governing Marine Protected Areas

Download or read book Governing Marine Protected Areas written by Peter Jones and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-02-24 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this innovative volume, the author addresses some important challenges related to the effective and equitable governance of marine protected areas (MPAs). These challenges are explored through a study of 20 MPA case studies from around the world. A novel governance analysis framework is employed to address some key questions: How can top-down and bottom-up approaches to MPA governance be combined? What does this mean, in reality, in different contexts? How can we develop and implement governance approaches that are both effective in achieving conservation objectives and equitable in fairly sharing associated costs and benefits? The author explores the many issues that these questions raise, as well as exploring options for addressing them. A key theme is that MPA governance needs to combine people, state and market approaches, rather than being based on one approach and its related ideals. Building on a critique of the governance analysis framework developed for common-pool resources, the author puts forward a more holistic and less prescriptive framework for deconstructing and analyzing the governance of MPAs. This inter-disciplinary analysis is aimed at supporting the development of MPA governance approaches that build social-ecological resilience through both institutional and biological diversity. It will also make a significant contribution to wider debates on natural resource governance, as it poses some critical questions for contemporary approaches to related research and offers an alternative theoretical and empirical approach.
