The book gives practical examples as well as a theoretical frame of reference for how to plan, organise and implement an intensive language programme for adults who already have professional training. It is the first time that a process of revitalisation of a very small language has been systematically described from the beginning; it is a small-scale success story. The book finishes with self-reflection and cautious recommendations for Indigenous peoples and minorities who want to revive or revitalise their languages.

Transcribed for the first time into current Penobscot orthography and with a new English translation, this instructive and entertaining story cycle focuses on the childhood and coming-of-age of Gluskabe, the tribe's culture hero. Learning from his grandmother Woodchuck, Gluskabe applies lessons that help shape the Wabanaki landscape and bring into balance all the forces affecting human life. These tales offer a window into the language and culture of the Penobscot people in the early twentieth century. In "Still They Remember Me," stories are presented in the Penobscot language and English side-by-side, coupled with illustrations from members of the tribal community. For the first time, these stories are accessible to a young generation of Penobscot language learners and scholars of Native American literatures at all levels, from grade school to graduate school.

The authors are all actively engaged in research on the maintenance of indigenous languages, and many of them do applied work in communities as well. It is hoped that the ideas and approaches presented in this book will encourage others working in the field of indigenous language revitalization and maintenance to keep up their efforts, and in so doing consider approaches to indigenous language education that operate at the local level and involve various members of the community.

Book excerpt: We are living in the 21st century and many Indigenous students across Canada live in ‘shame’, not knowing their language and culture. Indigenous students can feel like they are living in two worlds when they leave their communities to pursue postsecondary education. This can embed a fear in students that affects their public speaking, pronunciation, and response in their mother tongue. Indigenous critics of settler colonialism (Alfred, 2008; Battiste, 2013; Grande, 2004; Simpson, 2011) and critical education theorists (Kincheloe, 2008) have identified that mainstream education is a means of maintaining the status quo as represented by colonialism. A resurgence of language is needed for First Nation learners and educators and this resurgence is required if we are going to maintain, recover and reclaim Indigenous languages (Bear Nicholas, 2008). Simpson (2008) asserts that, “we have to regenerate our languages so we have communities of fluent speakers (p.17)... we need our Elders, our languages, along with vision, intent, commitment, community and ultimately, action” (p. 23).
