Book excerpt: Fiji has distinct institutional features that make it an ideal case for examining and discussing the consequences of institutional arrangements (particularly the nature of property rights) for national economic performance, development prospects, and the state of the environment which in turn, reflects a nation's ability to achieve sustainable development. Furthermore, the nature of institutional arrangements in Fiji can be used to illustrate aspects of both the new and the 'old' institutional economics. Apart from the fact that Fiji provides considerable scope for the exploration of institutional economics and its applications, Fiji is a comparatively important island nation in the south-west Pacific, that is, an important member of the Pacific Island Forum grouping of 14 island nations. The recent development of Fiji has been much influenced by its social history, particularly by its institutional structures established or codified during British colonial rule. Its present racial composition is largely a product of British colonisation. of Indians brought to Fiji by the British to produce sugar cane as a contribution to the economic development of the former British Empire. In many respects, the type of global imperialism that was well established during the nineteenth century was a forerunner to modern economic globalisation which involves a mixture of free trading blocs and multilateralism. The current population mixture of Fiji consisting of about equal numbers of Indian Fijians and Indigenous Fijians has its roots in Fiji's colonial history. Furthermore, the codified systems of property rights (which largely excludes Indian Fijians from the ownership of land) was established by the British. It has been a major source of ethnic tension, and of social and political conflict in Fiji. We show that this system of property rights has had important negative consequences for economic growth in Fiji, for the economic performance of its industries, and for the conservation of its natural resources. natural resources which may not be equitable, and which also does not appear to be efficient administratively. This adds to social and political tension in Fiji.

Brison examines the Harvest Ministry, an independent Fijian Pentecostal church that sends Fijian and Papua New Guinean missionaries to East Africa, Southeast Asia, Europe and elsewhere. After studying the ministry’s main church in Suva for several years, Brison visited its missionaries and their local partners in East Africa and Papua New Guinea. The result of those visits, this book provides an unusual insight into Pentecostal churches in the global south, arguing that they seldom produce novel visions of Christianity and world inequality. It also offers new perspectives, by situating Pacific island churches within a global community and by examining social class formation, which is increasingly important in the Pacific. Pentecostalism has a consistent culture all over the world, but shared themes take on different meanings in the face of local concerns. In Fiji, Pentecostal churches are part of middle-class projects constructing leadership roles and highlighting transnational ties for a growing group of indigenous urban professionals. In Papua New Guinea, church leaders promote the idea that youths with blocked aspirations are tough and humble and therefore make invaluable missionaries. In East Africa, Pentecostal churches are part of a networking strategy that entrepreneurial individuals see as essential to survival. As these local groups each use Pentecostalism to advance their own agenda, they endorse Euro-American racial stereotypes and ideologies about social evolution and progress.

Book excerpt: With the elevation of Islam and Muslim transnational networks in international affairs, from the rise of Al Qaeda to the revolutions in North Africa and the Middle East, the study of Diasporas and transnational identities has become more relevant. Using case studies from Fiji, Mauritius, Trinidad and South Africa, this book explores the diaspora identities and impact of social movements on politics and nationalism among indentured Indian diaspora. It analyses the way in which diasporas are defined by themselves and others, and the types of social movements they participate in, showing how these are critical indicators of the threat they are perceived to pose. The book examines the notions of national and transnational identity, and how they are determined by the placement of Diasporas in the transnational locality. It argues that the transnationality intrinsic to diaspora identities mark them as others in the nation-state, and simultaneously separates them from the perceived motherland, thus displacing them from both states and situating them in a transnational locality. It is from this placement that social movements among Diasporas gain salience. As outsiders and insiders, they are well placed to offer a formidable challenge to the host state, but these challenges are limited by their hybrid identities and perceived divided loyalties. Providing an in-depth analysis of Indian Diasporas, the book will be of interest to those studying South Asian Studies, Migration and Diaspora Studies.
