Book excerpt: The purpose of the indicators were: to guide the selection of sites for farm- level study of adaptive behaviours; to help illuminate the types of policy interventions that support farm- and community-level adaptation to climate variability and change; and to help identify Prairie locations that are most vulnerable to future climate change. [...] Our analysis highlights the importance of multiple perspectives in assessing adaptive capacity-all six of the determinants were reflected in field interviews with producers and producer organizations across the Prairies and 15 of the 24 indicator categories developed were representative of what producers felt were important with respect to their capacity to adapt. [...] The earliest scientific assessment of the Prairie region challenged the notion of viable agriculture in the area. [...] The more exposed a system is to a particular climate stimulus, the greater the system vulnerability; conversely, the greater the adaptive capacity of the system to a given climate event, the lower its vulnerability. [...] The highest-ranking corridor extends from the Winnipeg/Portage la Prairie area south to the U. S. border along and to the east of the Red River.

Book excerpt: Although there is considerable historical literature describing the social and economic impact of drought on the prairies in the 1930s, little has been written about the challenges presented by drought in more contemporary times. The drought of 2001-02 was, for example, the most recent large-area, intense, and prolonged drought in Canada and one of Canada's most costly natural disasters in a century. Vulnerability and Adaptation to Drought on the Canadian Prairies describes the impacts of droughts and the adaptations made in prairie agriculture over recent decades. These adaptations have enhanced the capacity of rural communities to withstand drought. However, despite the high levels of technical adaptation that have occurred, and the existing human capital and vibrant social and information networks, agricultural producers in the prairie region remain vulnerable to severe droughts that last more than a couple of years. Research findings and projections suggest that droughts could become more frequent, more seveare, and of longer duration in the region over the course of the 21st century. This book provides insights into the conditions generating these challenges and the measures required to reduce vulnerability of prairie communities to them. This volume develops a greater understanding of the social forces and conditions that have contributed to enhanced resilience, as well as those which detract from successful adaptation and examines drought through an interdisciplinary lens encompassing climate science and the social sciences

Climate change will have a significant impact on its agriculture and through these changes on related industries in the region, as well as on other parts of Canada and rest of the world. This study is a synthesis of literature on various aspects of climate change,Äîimpacts, adaptation, and knowledge gaps for the Prairie Region. These impacts include potential to increase crop production through higher yields, improved livestock productivity, and higher income for producers through higher export sales. Agriculture may also expand to higher latitude areas that are currently not capable of sustaining such an activity. However, the dampening effect on the region would be through higher frequency of extreme events,Äîdroughts and floods. In spite of positive effect of climate change on the region, adaptation to climate change by producers will be virtually necessary. Producers are willing to adopt such measures, although there are major knowledge gaps in how climate change would affect and how one can adapt to it. Major uncertainties are carbon fertilization, ability of northern areas to sustain production with shifting ecozones, and impact of new pest and diseases, among others, which may affect the degree of resiliency of the prairie agriculture to climate change. This review concludes that the prairie agriculture is resilient except under prolong and intense extreme events and lack of adaptation to them.
