Souvent sous-estimées, elles ont une importance toute particulière car ce sont elles qui achèvent généralement l'intervention chirurgicale. C'est ce dernier temps interventionnel qui va favoriser un bon aménagement des tissus parodontaux grâce à une bonne cicatrisation. Chaque situation clinique doit avoir une réalisation de sutures appropriée. Une chirurgie nécessite une connaissance des instruments et des matériaux utilisés afin de tirer avantages des caractéristiques de chacun d'entre eux. Le choix du matériel de suture est lié à la composition du fil mais aussi à la taille et à la forme de l'aiguille. De nos jours, une vaste gamme de fils de suture existe. Ces derniers sont décrits selon trois caractéristiques : naturel ou synthétique, tressé ou monofilament et résorbable ou non. Il en est de même pour la technique et les différents types de points existants (allant du point simple au point matelassier horizontal). Avec un tel nombre de possibilités, il devient complexe de les choisir correctement, tout en sachant pourquoi ? Par conséquent, il s'avère nécessaire de connaitre le matériel et les techniques existantes. Ceci nous permet alors d'adapter les différentes techniques en fonction de la situation voir même de les combiner dans certains cas.
