Download or read book Studies in French Applied Linguistics written by Dalila Ayoun and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 2008-10-29 with total page 417 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Studies in French Applied Linguistics invites the reader to adopt a broad perspective on applied linguistics, illustrating the fascinating multifaceted work researchers are conducted in so many various, inter-connected subfields. The five chapters of the first part are dedicated to the first and second language acquisition of French in various settings: First language acquisition by normal children from a generative perspective and by children with Specific Language Impairment; second language acquisition in Canadian immersion settings, from a neurolinguistic approach to phonology and natural language processing and CALL. The six chapters of the second part explore the contribution of French in various subfields of applied linguistics such as an anthropological approach to literacy issues in Guadeloupean Kréyòl, literacy issues in new technologies, phonological and lexical innovations in the banlieues, French in North Africa, language planning and policy in Quebec, as well as the emerging field of forensic linguistics from an historical perspective.

Book Language in Canada

Download or read book Language in Canada written by John Edwards and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1998-07-09 with total page 521 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Language in Canada provides an up-to-date account of the linguistic and cultural situation in Canada, primarily from a sociolinguistic perspective. The strong central theme connecting language with group and identity will offer insights into the current linguistic and cultural tension in Canada. The book provides comprehensive accounts of the original 'charter' languages, French and English, as well as the aboriginal and immigrant varieties which now contribute to the overall picture. It explains how they came into contact - and sometimes into conflict - and looks at the many ways in which they weave themselves through and around the Canadian social fabric. The public policy issues, particularly official bilingualism and educational policy and language, are also given extensive coverage. Non-specialists as well as linguists will find in this volume, a companion to Language in Australia, Language in the USA and Language in the British Isles, an indispensable guide and reference to the linguistic heritage of Canada.

Book The Evaluation of Language Regimes

Download or read book The Evaluation of Language Regimes written by Michele Gazzola and published by John Benjamins Publishing Company. This book was released on 2014-08-15 with total page 403 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Building on existing analytical frameworks, this book provides a new methodology allowing different language policies in international multilingual organisations (or “language regimes”) to be compared and evaluated on the basis of criteria such as efficiency and fairness. It explains step-by-step how to organise the evaluation of language regimes and how to design and interpret indicators for such evaluation. The second part of this book applies the theoretical framework to the evaluation of the language policy of the Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT) division of the World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO) and the European Patent Office (EPO). Results show that an increase in linguistic diversity of the language regimes of patent organisations can both improve the efficiency of the patent system and lead to a more balanced distribution of costs among countries. This book is a resource for scholars in language policy and planning and for policy-makers in the international and European patent system.

Book Translation and Public Policy

Download or read book Translation and Public Policy written by Gabriel González Núñez and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-04-21 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book brings together an ensemble of leading voices from the fields of economics, language policy, law, political philosophy, and translation studies. They come together to provide theoretical perspectives and practical case studies regarding a shared concern: translation policy. Their timely perspectives and case studies allow for the problematizing and exploration of translation policy, an area that is beginning to come to the attention of scholars. This book offers the first truly interdisciplinary approach to an area of study that is still in its infancy. It thus makes a timely and necessary contribution. As the 21st century marches on, authorities are more and more confronted with the reality of multilingual societies, and the monolingual state polices of yesteryear seem unable to satisfy increasing demands for more just societies. Precisely because of that, language policies of necessity must include choices about the use or non-use of translation at different levels. Thus, translation policy plays a prominent yet often unseen role in multilingual societies. This role is shaped by tensions and compromises that bear on the distribution of resources, choices about language, legal imperatives, and notions of justice. This book aims to inform scholars and policy makers alike regarding these issues.

Book La Charte La loi 101 et les Qu b cois d expression anglaise The Charter Bill 101 and English Speaking Quebec

Download or read book La Charte La loi 101 et les Qu b cois d expression anglaise The Charter Bill 101 and English Speaking Quebec written by Lorraine O'Donnell and published by Presses de l'Université Laval. This book was released on 2021-06-22T00:00:00-04:00 with total page 532 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: La Charte. The Charter: Bill 101 and English-Speaking Quebec The Charter of the French Language, also called Bill 101, profoundly changed Quebec. The 1977 law made state institutions, certain workplaces, and commercial signs predominantly French. Since the law's adoption, the English-speaking minority has experienced population loss, economic decline, and school closures, but also a growing organizational vitality and increased participation in Francophone Quebec. This book features chapters in English or French by researchers and engaged citizens. They explore the Charter in relation to English-speaking Quebec and within a broad historical, political, legal, and socio-economic context. A complex view of the Quebec law and its communities emerges.

Book Beheading the Saint

  • Author : Geneviève Zubrzycki
  • Publisher : University of Chicago Press
  • Release : 2016-12-19

Download or read book Beheading the Saint written by Geneviève Zubrzycki and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2016-12-19 with total page 247 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Through much of its existence, Québec’s neighbors called it the “priest-ridden province.” Today, however, Québec society is staunchly secular, with a modern welfare state built on lay provision of social services—a transformation rooted in the “Quiet Revolution” of the 1960s. In Beheading the Saint, Geneviève Zubrzycki studies that transformation through a close investigation of the annual Feast of St. John the Baptist of June 24. The celebrations of that national holiday, she shows, provided a venue for a public contesting of the dominant ethno-Catholic conception of French Canadian identity and, via the violent rejection of Catholic symbols, the articulation of a new, secular Québécois identity. From there, Zubrzycki extends her analysis to the present, looking at the role of Québécois identity in recent debates over immigration, the place of religious symbols in the public sphere, and the politics of cultural heritage—issues that also offer insight on similar debates elsewhere in the world.
