Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Century of Indiana The production of this work is the result of a belief that there is a field for a new history of Indiana, briefer in general narrative, though fuller in political and constitutional history, than other standard works heretofore published. The word political is of course used in its governmental and not its partisan sense, though every phase of the state's history is treated according to its relative impor tance, the activities of the leading political parties not excepted. Book County Option in Indiana Classic Reprint

Download or read book County Option in Indiana Classic Reprint written by J. Frank Hanly and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-04 with total page 38 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from County Option in Indiana Fellow Citizens: It is not only the privilege, it is the right and the bounden duty of every man living in a free commonwealth to speak the truth to his fellows, without fear or favor, as God gives him to see and understand the truth, concerning any matter affecting the public welfare. One's countrymen are entitled to the reason for the faith by which he walks. They may not accept his faith, but his reasons for his faith are their just due. This is peculiarly true of one who has held at the hands of his fellows high place in the conduct of the commonwealth's affairs. I am here today to embrace that privilege, to claim that right and discharge that duty concerning a matter which I have long felt and do now feel to be of deep and abiding importance to this people - a people, who, in the light of my many limitations and temperamental defects, have signally honored me, making me thereby their debtor to the end of my days, be they few or many. For months I have not spoken on any public question. But the time has come when conditions in the state and gratitude for past favors compel me to break my silence. I speak disinterestedly. If I know my soul I have no wish but the public good, no desire but the happiness of this people. The fires of self-interest burn low on the hearthstone of my heart. My country has become my larger self, the dearest part of me. I have no machine or organization to promote; no patronage to bestow; no favorites to reward; no foes to punish. I seek no office; no public preferment of any kind. There is absolutely nothing within your power to give or bestow that I desire you to do for me other than to bear me for my cause, to give consideration to what I say relating to matters of public concern, and to permit me to continue to abide among you and share your destiny, whatever that destiny may be, until my life's measure shall be filled. I am conscious that it will be difficult for some men to accept this statement. Themselves accustomed to act only upon motives of personal interest, they are slow to believe that another may act without regard to such interests. And yet the statement is absolutely true and has been true every hour for more than five years. There came a moment early in my administration of the state government when I was compelled to choose between public obligation and personal ambition; between duty and popularity; between service and subserviency; between exposure of wrong and condonation of crime. Book Centennial History of Indiana Classic Reprint

Download or read book Centennial History of Indiana Classic Reprint written by Aleck Davis and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-04 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Centennial History of Indiana A half century ago, there was a crying need for Mrs. Winslow's Soothing Syrup among the children of Indiana. To day, those of the children of '66, who have survived the taking ways of malaria, the White Caps and the automobile, are engaged in the mad rush for wealth and too busy to spend weeks and months poring over, and wading through, the long drawn-out detailed, dry facts of history as heretofore doled out to Indiana readers; hence this little volume. It is designed to take the place of Mother Winslow's concoction as the crying need of a busy public. This work is not intended to belittle the efforts of such historians as have gone before. They did the best they could. Many of them did not have the advantage of an acquaintance with the author of this work. The Centennial History is designed to be a plain, truthful, delineation of important events in Indiana. It is arranged so that the shop-keeper, in his leisure moments between sales of shirtwaists and prunes, and the farmer, during the noon hours and on rainy afternoons, may glean the history of their native state, free from the frills, embellishments and biased opinions of the larger chronicles. All such superfluous matters as Indian massacres, detailed political battles and biographies of big guns have been eliminated. Nobody's picture, or his own recollection of the great things he has accomplished, is published herein at so much per. Book Biographical and Historical Sketches of Early Indiana Classic Reprint

Download or read book Biographical and Historical Sketches of Early Indiana Classic Reprint written by William Wesley Woollen and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-08 with total page 602 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Biographical and Historical Sketches of Early Indiana Many of the sketches contained in this book were originally published in the Indianapolis Journal. These, and such as have been given the public in other papers, have been carefully revised and rewritten. Some of the sketches, how ever, were prepared expressly for this work. I have not written of living men, but only of those who have passed away. The dead Governors of Indiana - both Territorial and State - are sketched, and monographs of other distinguished men are given. The book contains other papers, of a historical character, the whole making a work which, I hope, will prove of permanent value. The information contained in this book, which necessarily develops much of the early political history of the State, was obtained from various sources, and can not elsewhere be found without great research and labor. N o inconsiderable part of it is derived from the author's own observation and recollection, and would pass away with him were it not committed to writing. Should this book be favorably received' by the public, it will, most probably, be followed by another of similar character, for the author is in possession of abundant material for such a work. Book The Gentleman from Indiana Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Gentleman from Indiana Classic Reprint written by Booth Tarkington and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-30 with total page 520 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Gentleman From Indiana On the station 'platforms therefire always two or three wooden packing-boxes, apparently marked for travel, but they are sacred from disturbance and remain on the platform forever; possibly the right train never comes along. They serve to enthrone a few station loafers, who look out from under their hat-brims at the faces in the car-windows with the languid scorn a permanent fixture always has for a transient, and the pity an American feels for a fellow-being who does not live in his town. Now and then the train passes a town built scatteringly about a court-house, with a mill or two humming near the tracks. This is a county-seat, and the inhabitants and the local papers refer to it confi dently as our city. The heart of the flat lands is a central area called Carlow County, and the county seat of Carlow is a town unhappily named in honor of its first settler, williamvplatt, who christened it with his blood. Natives of this place have sometimes re marked, easily, that'their city had a population of from five to six thousand souls. It is easy to forgive them for such statements; civic pride is a virtue. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Art in Indiana Tne articles here reprinted made no pretense of being a complete and well rounded treatment of the subject. It is believed. However. That they contain material that it is desirable to preserve in a more permanent and available form than newspaper files. No attempt has been made to revise them except that some typographical errors have been corrected and a very few other. Changes have been made, of not more than a dozen or so lines. There are some repetitions that were incidental to the publication of the matter as a series of articles. In newspaper publication an arbitrary division was made in some instances, Splitting up a single topic into more than one article. Here such articles have been placed under a single heading.
