Book Reinforcing Patriarchy

Download or read book Reinforcing Patriarchy written by Chetna Bhatia and published by Educreation Publishing. This book was released on with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The life of a common Indian woman is full of struggles, dilemmas, pressures and conflicts. Family's pressure to plan kids, explanations for opting night shift jobs, scolding about going alone to eating places and movies, reservation of seats in public transport, reaching out to diet and cosmetic industries to attain size zero and ultra-fair faces to get her boyfriend’s attention back.Where does 21st century Indian society stand on such issues? Also, what role does mass media, especially advertising plays in influencing public mindset about women ? This work acknowledged the need of examining it with reference to a wider context of the hard core issues faced by women in their bedrooms, kitchens, offices, streets and living rooms. Therefore, a sincere effort was put in reaching out to the people and mapping their minds through a set of questions (hidden form) about the control over a woman's body, the concept of her beauty, aspects of her occupation and mobility, her role in decision-making and in division of labor in the households. The book goes one step ahead of the typical impact studies or analysis of stereotypes in advertisements. For those interested in women studies, the book contains facts about women's movement in India till 2016 and a complete list of issues affecting a woman from her bedroom to her workplace. Those interested in advertising and cultural studies can find a full-length discussion on basic aspects of advertising as a format and as an institution .For the scholars of media studies or sociology, the work contains self-constructed Likert scales and codes. Further, the research has attempted to directly compare the advertisements and society on common parameters. The study draws its basic concepts and critical perspective from the works of Richard W Polay, John Fiske, John Hartley, Daniel Schandler, Lewis Hedwig, Kamla Bhasin, Nivedita Menon, Naomi Wolf, Radha Kumar, Foucault, Erving Goffman and Laura Mulvey. The issue has been examined thoroughly in the light of contemporary events and factors which make it more relevant to the present stage of globalized Indian society.

Simran Mehta has always felt harshly judged by her mother, Nandini, especially when it comes to her little "writing hobby." Nandini Mehta has strived to create an easy life for her children in America. From dealing with her husband's demanding family to the casual racism of her patients, everything Nandini has endured has been for her children's sake. Mimi Kadakia failed her daughter, Nandini, in ways she'll never be able to fix—or forget. But with her granddaughter, she has the chance to be supportive and offer help when it's needed. As life begins to pull Nandini and Simran apart, Mimi is determined to be the bridge that keeps them connected, even as she carries her own secret burden.

Book Gendered Modernity and Indian Cinema

Download or read book Gendered Modernity and Indian Cinema written by Devapriya Sanyal and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-12-09 with total page 187 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book analyses the role of women in the films of one of the leading filmmakers of the ‘Third World’ in the 1950s, Satyajit Ray, a national icon in filmmaking in India. The book explores the portrayal of women in the context of the creation of national culture after India became independent. Gender issues were very important to India under Jawaharlal Nehru in the 1950s – with the enactment of inheritance and divorce laws. Ray’s portrayal of women and his films anticipate much of the theorizing of later-day feminism. This book analyses cinematic texts with special reference to the women characters using feminist film theory and representation along with a study of the socio-political and economic conditions pertinent to the times – both relevant to the film’s making and its setting. The primary texts studied are films spanning over four decades from Pather Panchali (1955) to his last trilogy and are based on a categorization of the broad feminine ‘types’ represented in the films – based on the socio-political situations in which they are placed – and their relationships with the other characters present. Ray’s portrayal of women has an enormous bearing on our understanding of how modern India evolved in the Nehru era and after, and this book explore just that: the place of the woman as it is and should be in a young nation encumbered by patriarchy. Gendered Modernity and Indian Cinema will be of interest to academics in the field of World cinema, Indian and Bengali cinema, Film Studies as well as Gender Studies and South Asian culture and society.

Book Affirmation and Denial

Download or read book Affirmation and Denial written by Prabha Krishnan and published by SAGE Publications Pvt. Limited. This book was released on 1990-06 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In many parts of the world, women are continually portrayed in one of two ways: either in terms of traditional domestic roles or in terms of their sexual appeal to the male population. In Affirmation and Denial, the authors examine this two-dimensional perception--emphasizing that a contributing factor has been the lack of access and control over communication media given to women. This book seeks to redress this imbalance and to promote portrayals of women which reflect their significant contributions to society. Krishnan and Dighe have produced an eclectic research methodology to survey the nature and quality of the portrayal of women in various types of programs on television. Using Indian television as their case study, Krishnan and Dighe found that traditional values have had a direct impact over the portrayal of women. They are invariably portrayed as wives, mothers, or daughters, or they are depicted as victims of adversity or beneficiaries of government schemes. Affirmation and Denial is necessary reading for all those interested in gender studies, communication, sociology, and development studies. "This well-written book is a welcome addition to a growing volume of research using diverse investigative techniques to analyze literature, art, television, movies, and other media. It will be useful as a reference work to students of sociology of mass media, sex roles, and women's studies courses." --Contemporary Sociology "Two social scientists of repute have done a thorough analysis of the complex interaction between womanhood in its widest sense and images and representation of the female sex on Indian Television. That Prabha Krishnan and Anita Dighe are women only enhances the quality of their work, their perceptions and their ability to cut through the rhetoric and proceed to the heart of the issue....the authors are at their best in establishing a link between the findings of their research and the structures which encourage the unrealistic construction of femininity on television....because such a thorough discussion takes place, I commend the scholars on this book and recommend it as reading not only to feminists but to all, especially to Indian women, so that they might be conscientised into the reality of womanhood in India." --Media Development
