This book was released on 2017-11-30 with total page 414 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Indian Railways as Connected With British Empire in the East Delhi Railway, that from Lahore to Ghasiabad, a length of 335 miles. This is fed by metalled roads only at the stations of Amritsar, J ullun dur, Ludhiana, Rajpura, Umballa, Saharanpur, Muzaffarnagar, and Meerut, z'.e. At intervals of 32, 49, 35, 53, 13, 55, 36, 35, and 27 miles; while the other stations, thirty-six in number, are practicably unapproachable by cart traflic for three months in the year, and during the remaining nine months only at a heavy cost in carts and bullocks, which have to make their way over the village tracks which do duty for roads. To anyone who sees the actual state of the case, the wonder is that a large portion of the traffic ever gets to the line at all. I have shown, indeed, in more than one of my Inspection Reports, from cases that have actually come under my notice, that the cost of cartage to the line, even in fair weather, is from ten to forty times the cost of carriage over the same length on the railway; though even this is a mild statement of the case, for such is the state of the cross-country roads that, in the rainy season, they are practicably impassable by carts, and traffic is more or less suspended all over the country. Let it be borne in mind that the above line passes through a richly cultivated and populous country for the whole of its length, and is very much better provided with roads than other line. These undertakings, particularly the railways, involved a large-scale investment of British capital in India. The terms under which this capital moved, and, more precisely, the struggle to secure these terms, form the heart of this study.

Book Railways and the Raj

Download or read book Railways and the Raj written by Christian Wolmar and published by . This book was released on 2017-11 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the second half of the nineteenth century, the plans for British Empire expansion knew no bounds and landscapes around the world were forever changed by colonial infrastructure. In 1842 not a single mile of railway line existed in India: by 1929 41,000 miles of track served the country. Yet this was not intended to modernise India for the sake of its people but was a means for those in power to govern the huge country under their control. Despite the dubious intentions for the construction of the network, the Indian people quickly took to the railways, expanding their horizons and making migration to the cities of India easier than ever before. The Indian Railways network remains one of the largest in the world, serving over 25 million passengers each day. By building the railways in India, Britain radically changed the nation but also unwittingly created the preconditions of independence. While the railways greatly benefitted India and were the nation's first modern development, their construction ultimately contributed to a stirring of nationalist opinion. In this expertly told history, Christian Wolmar traces the evolution of India's rail network, revealing how it was largely subverted for British economic and military purposes. He also examines the chequered role of the railways in Indian history and the part they played in the creation of today's modern state.

Download or read book Tracks of Change written by Ritika Prasad and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2016-05-12 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the mid-nineteenth century onwards, railways became increasingly important in the lives of a growing number of Indians. While allowing millions to collectively experience the endemic discomforts of third-class travel, the public opportunities for proximity and contact created by railways simultaneously compelled colonial society to confront questions about exclusion, difference, and community. It was not only passengers, however, who were affected by the transformations that railways wrought. Even without boarding a train, one could see railway tracks and embankments reshaping familiar landscapes, realise that train schedules represented new temporal structures, fear that spreading railway links increased the reach of contagion, and participate in new forms of popular politics focused around railway spaces. Tracks of Change explores how railway technology, travel, and infrastructure became increasingly woven into everyday life in colonial India, how people negotiated with the growing presence of railways, and how this process has shaped India's history.
