Book excerpt: The American Indian Wars, or Indian Wars, were the multiple conflicts between American settlers or the United States government and the native peoples of North America from the time of earliest colonial settlement until 1924. In some cases, wars resulted from conflicts and competition for resources between the European colonists and Native Americans. There was population pressure as settlers expanded their territory, generally pushing indigenous people northward and westward. Warfare and raiding also took place as a result of wars between European powers; in North America, these enlisted their Native American allies to help them conduct warfare against each other's settlements. Many conflicts were local, involving disputes over land use, and some entailed cycles of reprisal. Particularly in later years, conflicts were spurred by ideologies such as Manifest Destiny, which held that the United States was destined to expand from coast to coast on the North American continent. In the 1830s, the United States had a policy of Indian removal east of the Mississippi River, which was a planned, large-scale removal of indigenous peoples from the areas where Europeans were settling. Particularly in the years leading up to Congressional passage of the related act, there was armed conflict between settlers and Native Americans; some removal was achieved through sale or exchange of territory through treaties.

Book excerpt: This history concerns the wars with the Native Americans, as the United States expanded westward and sought to exert its control over greater portions of North America. The hostilities narrated include some of the most famous actions such as the campaign of Little Big Horn, and some of the most famous figures in the conflicts such as Sitting Bull, a Lakota Sioux chieftain whose famous resistance stalled efforts of the USA. Some of the principle skirmishes, such as The Battle of the Rosebud, are expertly narrated with the use of sources from both sides. The famous General Custer, whose untimely death - in an event often called Custer's Last Stand - is treated incisively, with comment upon the tactics that prefaced the General's demise. First published in 1904, this book has the benefit of close proximity to the events described. Among other sources Cyrus Townsend Brady contacted many soldiers, most of whom were in retirement, to ensure his accounts were factual and exact. The author wanted not simply to summarize a vast, decades-long series of warring conflicts, but also to make a meaningful addition to the existing body of work on the subject. A total of twenty-seven diagrams of battlefields, and photographs of those relevant to the wars, serve to guide the reader.

This book was released on 2010-11 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The great clash between the U.S Army and the Plains Indian tribes Everyone who has been fascinated by the history of the American western frontier has much for which to thank Cyrus Townsend Brady, the author of this book. Brady was a prolific author of both fiction and non fiction and in both genres his abiding interest and knowledge of the history of his own country is a well demonstrated. This book, 'Indian Fights and Fighters, ' captivated readers upon its publication and its success made the series of which it was part highly popular, although it was the fourth, not the first in his 'American Fights and Fighters Series.' Several more 'Fights and Fighters' books, based upon similar themes, followed. Brady relates-with some scholarship and with the help of maps, plans and illustrations-the principal engagements of the Plains Indian Wars in the period after the Civil War. The book draws on the first hand accounts of many of the people who were involved and is notable for bringing before the reader accounts by those who had not previously been published. Herein is a veritable cornucopia of western incident, campaigns, battles, fights and massacres, the full list of which is too numerous to catalogue here. They include the Fetterman Massacre, the Wagon Box Fight, Beecher's Island, the Fight on Beaver Creek, the Washita, the Rosebud and many, many more. This book has become an invaluable, highly regarded and enduring classic of the History of the West. Available in softcover and hardcover with dustjacket for collectors.
