Book excerpt: Washakie was chief of the eastern band of the Shoshone Indians for almost sixty years, until his death in 1900. A strong leader of his own people, he saw the wisdom of befriending the whites. Grace Raymond Hebard offers an engaging view of Washakie’s long life and the early history of Shoshone-occupied land—embracing present-day Wyoming and parts of Montana, Idaho, and Utah. Washakie is seen signing historic treaties, aiding overland emigrants in the 1850s, and finally assisting whites in fighting the Sioux. According to Hebard, Washakie’s role in the battle on the Rosebud in June 1876 saved General Crook from the fate that befell General Custer eight days later on the Little Big Horn.

Many came, including Chief Washakie of the Eastern Shoshone, Chief Sharp Nose of the Northern Arapaho, Butch Cassidy and outlaws, Buffalo Bill, and others. The area around the Big Spring became the town of Thermopolis (Hot City), Wyoming, in 1897. Later, the estate of William and Carrie Gottsche of Rock Springs, Wyoming, helped establish a nationally recognized rehabilitation center in Thermopolis. Pres. Franklin D. Roosevelt made a brief stop near the springs to affirm his belief (like Washakie and Sharp Nose) that the water could be used for the good of humanity. Today, Hot Springs State Park is host to hundreds of thousands of visitors each year. They enjoy the mineral waters that originate at the Big Spring at 125-127 degrees and cool to a comfortable 104 degrees in water parks, hotels, and a state bathhouse. The Big Spring is one of the largest flowing hot mineral springs in the world.

Book Hot Springs County Wyoming

Download or read book Hot Springs County Wyoming written by Alex Service and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2002 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nestled in Wyoming's Big Horn Basin, Hot Springs County has been home to ranchers, freighters, railroad men, lawmen and outlaws, coal miners and oil field hands. This book, featuring over 200 vintage photographs from the Hot Springs County Museum and the Milek family collection, tells the story of the settlement and culture of the County from 1871 to 1940. One of the last regions to be settled during the United States' 19th-century westward expansion, the springs that gave Hot Springs County its name were considered sacred by many of the native tribes of the region, including the Shoshoni and Arapaho. By 1875, white men were seeking out the healing springs as well as the ranching opportunities at the western end of the county. Along with the industrious and hardworking pioneers came the outlaws and the notorious. Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid were common acquaintances of county residents, especially local characters such as the mysterious Minne Brown and Tom Skinner, owner of the infamous Hole in the Wall Bar. Captured here are the businesses, mining and oil camps, lifestyles, and residents of the various towns of Hot Springs County, including Thermopolis, Gebo, Crosby, Kirby, Grass Creek, and Hamilton Dome.

Book Restoring a Presence

    Book Details:
  • Author : Peter Nabokov
  • Publisher : University of Oklahoma Press
  • Release : 2016-01-18
  • ISBN : 080615408X

Download or read book Restoring a Presence written by Peter Nabokov and published by University of Oklahoma Press. This book was released on 2016-01-18 with total page 401 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Placing American Indians in the center of the story, Restoring a Presence relates an entirely new history of Yellowstone National Park. Although new laws have been enacted giving American Indians access to resources on public lands, Yellowstone historically has excluded Indians and their needs from its mission. Each of the other flagship national parks—Glacier, Yosemite, Mesa Verde, and Grand Canyon—has had successful long-term relationships with American Indian groups even as it has sought to emulate Yellowstone in other dimensions of national park administration. In the first comprehensive account of Indians in and around Yellowstone, Peter Nabokov and Lawrence Loendorf seek to correct this administrative disparity. Drawing from archaeological records, Indian testimony, tribal archives, and collections of early artifacts from the Park, the authors trace the interactions of nearly a dozen Indian groups with each of Yellowstone’s four geographic regions. Restoring a Presence is illustrated with historical and contemporary photographs and maps and features narratives on subjects ranging from traditional Indian uses of plant, mineral, and animal resources to conflicts involving the Nez Perce, Bannock, and Sheep Eater peoples. By considering the many roles Indians have played in the complex history of the Yellowstone region, authors Nabokov and Loendorf provide a basis on which the National Park Service and other federal agencies can develop more effective relationships with Indian groups in the Yellowstone region.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the 1930s in the United States, the Works Progress Administration developed the Federal Writers’ Project to support writers and artists while making a national effort to document the country’s shared history and culture. The American Guide series consists of individual guides to each of the states. Little-known authors—many of whom would later become celebrated literary figures—were commissioned to write these important books. John Steinbeck, Saul Bellow, Zora Neale Hurston, and Ralph Ellison are among the more than 6,000 writers, editors, historians, and researchers who documented this celebration of local histories. Photographs, drawings, driving tours, detailed descriptions of towns, and rich cultural details exhibit each state’s unique flavor. Published in 1941, on the fiftieth anniversary of the state, the WPA Guide to Wyoming is a thorough reflection of both the history of the state’s pioneer routes as well an attempt to capture the beauty of the surrounding area in photographs. Descriptions of the Equality State’s livestock and oil industries are included as well as pictorial documentation of the area’s vast expanses of open land.
