Book Deepening Economic Cooperation between India and Sri Lanka

Download or read book Deepening Economic Cooperation between India and Sri Lanka written by Indra Nath Mukherji and published by Asian Development Bank. This book was released on 2013-09-01 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book analyzes the performance and impact of the India–Sri Lanka free trade agreement over the past decade and suggests the way forward. India became an important source of imports for Sri Lanka immediately after the implementation of the free trade agreement. Bilateral trade between the countries increased steadily thereafter, with Sri Lankan commodities finding a large market in India. The composition of trade also changed with an increased number of new goods being traded. The book computes indices and suggests scope for deepening economic cooperation between the two countries by pruning the negative lists for trade in goods, identifying potential investment, and suggesting policies for expanding cooperation in services.

Book Look East to Act East Policy

Download or read book Look East to Act East Policy written by Gurudas Das and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-02-12 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume captures the success of India’s Look East Policy (LEP) in promoting economic engagement with neighbouring countries in Asia and simultaneously its limitations in propelling growth in the bordering North Eastern Region — India’s bridge head to South East Asia. It analyses the instrumental role of LEP in bringing a tectonic shift in India’s foreign trade by redirecting the focus from the West to the East, thus leading to a fundamental change in the nature of India’s economic interdependence. Besides discussing foreign trade, it expounds as to how LEP made India play an important role in the emerging Asian security architecture and liberated Indian foreign policy from being centred on South Asia. The essays also enumerate the reasons for LEP’s failure in the North Eastern Region and chart out actionable programmes for course correction that might be factored into its latest edition — the Act East Policy. This book will interest scholars and researchers of international relations, international trade and economics, politics, and particularly those concerned with Northeast India.

Book excerpt: Prior to the economic reforms process initiated in 1991, India had adopted a very cautious and guarded approach to economic cooperation with other countries in the region. Recognizing that regional economic cooperation would continue to feature prominently in world trade, India engaged with its trading partners/blocks with the intention of expanding its export market and began concluding regional trade agreements. In 1991, India unveiled the Look East policy. East Asia - which includes Japan, China, South Korea, and ASEAN - became India's largest trading partner, ahead of the European Union and the United States. The proliferation of free trade agreements is the clearest evidence of Asian countries' desire to forge closer economic relationships. For two decades now, world economies have witnessed a paradigm shift towards market-oriented economic policies and a careful dismantling of obstacles in international trade. This has helped the smaller emerging economies gain access to world markets, modern technologies, and collaborations. This has also given them a window to the developed world and helped them understand the significant role of globalization as an instrument which could be utilized not just to achieve economic efficiency, but also to eradicate poverty. This book examines India's economic and trade relations with different countries of the world. [Subject: India Studies, Economics]

Book Economic Cooperation Between Singapore and India

Download or read book Economic Cooperation Between Singapore and India written by Faizal Yahya and published by Psychology Press. This book was released on 2008 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Asian interregional economic cooperation has assumed greater prominence with the rise of Asia’s two giant economies of China and India. The economic liberalization of China’s economy in 1979, followed by India in 1991, signalled the presence of business opportunities to foreign investors - including those from Asia. This book examines the growing economic relations between India and Singapore which has culminated in a Free Trade Agreement (FTA), the Comprehensive Economic Cooperation Agreement (CECA), signed by both economies in June 2005. Using the information technology sector as the main case study of the ‘alliance’ between Singapore and India, the book examines the challenges that both have overcome to expand their bilateral trade. In the process, Singapore has become one of the top five foreign investors in India. The CECA is important as it is the first free trade agreement that Singapore signed with a developing country; and furthermore it provided a blueprint for India to conclude similar FTAs with other ASEAN members. This book provides a competitive analysis for intra-regional foreign direct investment. Faizal Yahya demonstrates that the economic relationship between Singapore and India illuminates how both economies are attempting to meet future challenges. It will be of interest to scholars of international business studies, cross-cultural management, international trade, international relations, information management and South and Southeast Asian Studies.

Book Myanmar s External Trade

Download or read book Myanmar s External Trade written by Mya Than and published by Institute of Southeast Asian. This book was released on 1992 with total page 129 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The grim state of the Myanmar economy in the second half of the 1980s forced the previous government of the Burma Socialist Programme Party to liberalize its external and internal trade. Since the military coup following political chaos in the later part of 1988, Japan, the European Community and the United States have suspended new economic aid to Myanmar. This has led to the present military government, the State Law and Order Restoration Council (SLORC), to work towards closer cooperation in diplomatic and trade relations with other Southeast Asian countries and to further liberalize its trade sector. This study explores and analyzes Myanmar's external trade and its trade relations with Southeast Asian nations, many of which are members of the Association of Southeast Asian nations (ASEAN), and raises issues and prospects of economic cooperation with neighbouring countries in the region, including the option for active participation in ASEAN.

Download or read book India s Approach to Development Cooperation written by Sachin Chaturvedi and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-04-14 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: India is emerging as a key player in the development cooperation arena, not only because of the increasing volume and reach of its south-south cooperation but more so because of its leadership and advocacy for the development of a distinctly southern development discourse and knowledge generation. This book traces and analyses the evolution of Indian development cooperation. It highlights its significance both to global development and as an effective tool of Indian foreign policy. Focussing on how India has played an important role in supporting development efforts of partner countries in South Asia and beyond through its various initiatives in the realm of development cooperation, the book tracks the evolution, genesis, and the challenges India faces in the current international context. The contributions provide a rich mix of academic and government, policy and practice, Indian and external perspectives. Theory is complemented with empirical research, and case studies on countries and sectors as well as comparisons with other aid providing countries are presented. The book is of interest to researchers and policy makers in the field of development cooperation, the role of emerging powers from the South, international development, foreign policy and global political economy.

India's participation in the global economy has risen, with outstanding performances in some services, while the largest diaspora in the world is an asset in developing new markets. India has also lifted many millions of people out of poverty and has made access to housing for all a priority. Ambitious structural reforms -- including better targeted household support, financial inclusion initiatives, the implementation of the Goods and Services Tax, the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code, the new approach to federalism and the corporate income tax reform -- have played a key role.
