Book Furniture from British India and Ceylon

Download or read book Furniture from British India and Ceylon written by Amin Jaffer and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page 420 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This reference for collectors, dealers, and scholars discusses colonial Indian furniture and the material culture of British India, in which local craftsmen used their skills to adapt to Western styles, producing a hybrid form which is in some ways typically English but unmistakably Indian. The four chapters by Jaffer (research fellow, Victoria and Albert Museum) provide a contextual background and discuss life in early British India, furnishings and the domestic interior, the availability and acquisition of furniture, and the Indian consumption of Western furniture and decorative articles. The catalogue contains color and b & w illustrations of 200 pieces from the collections of the Victoria and Albert Museum and the Peabody Essex Museum, accompanied by descriptions, historical details, and notes on provenance, literature, exhibitions, and other relevant facts. Oversize: 9.5x11.25". Annotation copyrighted by Book News, Inc., Portland, OR

Book Travels in India Ceylon and Borneo

Download or read book Travels in India Ceylon and Borneo written by Basil Hall and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-04-08 with total page 293 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1931. 'Hall is the ideal travel-writer. He never wearies his readers, but makes them love him.' Times Literary Supplement Basil Hall's Fragments of Voyages and Travels originally appeared in nine volumes. Miscellaneous in their topics, and arranged without any order the volumes re-issued here have been selected for their clarity and interest, both geographical and historical. Few books give a more graphic picture of the Royal Navy a century ago and Hall's volumes are full of nautical information. Hall was also an indefatigable traveller and a keen observer who learnt Hindustani, Malay and Japanese, studied Hindu mythology, flora, fauna and geology and compiled the first ever vocabulary of the language of the Loo Choo Islands.

Book Voyages and Travels in India Ceylon the Red Sea Abyssinia and Egypt

Download or read book Voyages and Travels in India Ceylon the Red Sea Abyssinia and Egypt written by George Annesley Earl of Mountnorris and published by . This book was released on 1809 with total page 588 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: George Annesley, second Earl of Mountnorris (1770-1844), was a British aristocrat who, in 1802-06, undertook an extensive tour of parts of Asia and Africa. He was accompanied by Henry Salt (1780-1827), a trained artist who served as his secretary and draftsman. Mountnorris published this three-volume account of his travels upon his return to Britain, under the name Viscount Valentia, the title by which he was known in his younger years. The work includes engravings based on paintings and drawings made on the voyage by Salt, as well as two very detailed maps. Volume 1 is devoted mainly to India; Volume 2 to the Red Sea region; Volume 3 to Ethiopia and Egypt. A particularly noteworthy feature of the book is Salt's account of his 1805 visit to the Ethiopian highlands.
