Book The India US Partnership

Download or read book The India US Partnership written by Nish Acharya and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2016-05-12 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The story of US - India relations is one of unfulfilled potential. Despite their common commitment to democracy, diversity and free markets, their short and long term objectives have not aligned in a way to create a robust economic and political partnership. These two nations, which will soon be the second and the third largest economies in the world, must find ways to increase their economic integration over the next 15 years through institutional capacity building, creating a startup culture and using India’s talent pool to resolve complex global problems. Engaging the question of bilateral partnership from the perspectives of investment, public policy and philanthropy, Acharya delves into ways in which India can approach the goal of $1 trillion worth of economic ties with the US by 2030. Backed by 62 interviews of leaders from business, government, civil society and the academia and 30 case studies on the growing impact of American organizations on the Indian economy and of Indians on the American economy, this study highlights organizations that are inspirational models for their sectors and are aiming at realizing a trillion-dollar, long-term economic partnership between India and America.

Book Strategic Challenges

Download or read book Strategic Challenges written by Jayadeva Ranade and published by Harper Collins. This book was released on 2022-09-26 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the shifting sands of contemporary geopolitics, this edited volume puts the spotlight firmly on urgent strategic challenges India is likely to face by the year 2030. Already, major powers like China and Russia are adopting muscular policies with the intent of changing the global order. This includes attempts to take territories--claimed by them on the basis of, at times, imagined history--through the use of military force. The US and the West are struggling to retain their pre-eminence, while emerging powers in the Indo-Pacific are demanding representation at the global high table. Each player is seeking to shape events to their advantage. As alliances are altered, India finds itself in a position that calls for dexterous, nimble and bold policies. India is also presented with an opportunity to wield influence that would place it in an advantageous geopolitical position. Strategic Challenges aims to form a fuller picture of the situation by examining the various pieces that make up this dynamic kaleidoscope, with chapters authored by India's leading thinkers, analysts and strategists. Beginning with an introduction by the former foreign secretary, Vijay Gokhale, the topics the book tackles include the volatility of India's neighbourhood, its hesitant embrace of the US, implications of Russia's warming ties with China, modern military technology on land, sea and air, and the challenges of artificial intelligence, among others.

Book 2030 Agenda and India Moving from Quantity to Quality

Download or read book 2030 Agenda and India Moving from Quantity to Quality written by Sachin Chaturvedi and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2019-10-19 with total page 301 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents a selection of multifaceted development issues involving social, economic and environmental aspects, in order to inspire and guide implementation of the United Nations’ SDGs. It focuses on economic development, human well-being and sustainable pathways, with special attention to financial and knowledge resources, as well as measurement concepts. In doing so, the book draws a distinction between sustainability and sustainable pathways by refraining from dealing with broader and more direct environmental sustainability issues like climate change, environmental degradation and sustainable energy. The choice of topics, apart from their relevance for India, was guided by their importance in connection with multiple SDG goals. In addition to revealing the intricacies of systemic relationships and the dilemmas they create in policy choices, the book examines the role of actors and the critical importance of partnerships to help readers comprehend the breadth of diversities and inter-linkages involved. The roles of the central and state governments, the parliament and the state assemblies, the civil society, UN agencies and district-level authorities are separately explored in depth. Sharing valuable insights, the book encourages policymakers, practitioners and scholars to move towards a sustainable and equitable economy, and supports them in their efforts.

Book Future of Coal in India

Download or read book Future of Coal in India written by Rahul Tongia, Anurag Sehgal, Puneet Kamboj and published by Notion Press. This book was released on 2020-09-15 with total page 427 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mark Twain observed, “I'm in favour of progress; it's change I don't like.” Coal dominates Indian energy because it’s available domestically and cheap (especially without a carbon tax). If the global focus is on the energy transition, how does India ensure a just transition? Managing winners and losers will be the single largest challenge for India’s energy policy. Coal is entrenched in a complex ecosystem. In some states, it’s amongst the largest contributors to state budgets. The Indian Railways, India’s largest civilian employer, is afloat because it overcharges coal to offset under-recovery from passengers. Coal India Limited, the public sector miner that produces 85% of domestic coal, is the world’s largest coal miner. But despite enormous reserves, India imports about a quarter of consumption. On the flip side, coal faces inevitable pressure from renewable energy, which is the cheapest option for new builds. However, there is significant coal-based power capacity already in place, some of which is underutilized, or even stranded. Low per-capita energy consumption means India must still grow its energy supply. Before India can phase out coal, it must first achieve a plateau of coal. How this happens cost-effectively and with least resistance isn’t just a technical or economic question, it depends on the political economy of coal and its alternatives. Some stakeholders want to kill coal. A wiser option may be to first clean it up, instead of wishing it away. Across 18 chapters, drawing from leading experts in the field, we examine all aspects of coal’s future in India. We find no easy answers, but attempt to combine the big picture with details, bringing them together to offer a range of policy options.

  • Author : Joseph M. Kiesecker
  • Publisher : Island Press
  • Release : 2017-06-15
  • ISBN : 1610917227
  • Pages : 194 pages

Download or read book Energy Sprawl Solutions written by Joseph M. Kiesecker and published by Island Press. This book was released on 2017-06-15 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the next several decades, as human populations grow, the demand for energy will soar. But renewable energy sources have a large energy sprawl--the amount of land needed to produce energy--which can threaten biodiversity. In Energy Sprawl Solutions, scientists Joseph M. Kiesecker and David Naugle provide a roadmap for preserving biodiversity despite the threats of energy sprawl. Their strategy--development by design--identifies and sets aside land where biodiversity can thrive while consolidating development in areas with lower biodiversity value. This contributed volume features case studies from countries around the world, each describing a different energy sector and the way they have successfully maximized biodiversity protection. This book provides a needed guide for elected officials, industry representatives, NGOs and community groups who have a stake in sustainable energy-development planning.
