Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Index to the Prerogative Wills of Ireland, 1536-1810 Amongst the various sources of information open to the genealogist, it is generally admitted that Wills occupy the most important place. From a testamentary document, it is often possible to obtain particulars of three or four generations of a family, besides a general insight into the extent of civilization and social position of our ancestors. Not only can we see the autograph of the testator, but often ascertain the armorial bearings of the family, since it was customary in former days for testators not only to sign, but also to seal, their wills. By means of the armorial bearings on seals attached to wills one often obtains important clues to family descent - not to speak of the value of information about lands and residences, places of burial, and other useful matter mentioned in such documents. The wills in Ireland may be said to consist of two classes, Prerogative and Diocesan. Those proved in the Prerogative Court are the most important, containing, as they do, testamentary devises from all parts of Ireland, and generally referring to the more important members of the community. They commence in 1536, and continue to 1858. Before 1857, wills used to be proved in the Consistorial Court, that is, the Court of the Bishop or Ordinary, within whose diocese or jurisdiction the testator dweAbout the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Contains an index to over 40,000 Irish wills, most of which wree destroyed in the 1922 explosion at the Public Redord Office in Dublin. As a consequence this book is expecially important as the only surviving evidence of what did exist at one time. This index gives the name of every person who left a will, their address, rand or occupation and Behtam, and is the only index to his voluminous collections of abstracts and extracts in existence. However, this edition is doubly important because we have included the never-before-published supplement compiled in 1914 to corret errors and omissions in Vicars' work.

Book Indexes to Irish Wills

Download or read book Indexes to Irish Wills written by William Phillimore Watts Phillimore and published by . This book was released on 1970 with total page 880 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is an alphabetical index of over 30,000 Diocesan wills proved in the Consistorial Courts of Ireland between 1536 and 1857. Arranged by Dioceses, and preceded by maps showing in which Dioceses the various Irish counties are situated, the Indexes provide the name of the testator, his parish, county, and the date of probate and are, in short, complete lists of Diocesan wills proved up until 1857, when the various ecclesiastical courts were abolished by Act of Parliament and superseded by the Probate Court. Since the Public Record Office in Dublin was destroyed by fire in 1922, information furnished by this work is very often the only source for determining the social and financial status of an ancestor. These indexes also provide clues for checking land records for an estate partition and transfers of lease from testator to heir. This volume is a perfect companion to Sir Arthur Vicars' "Index to the Prerogative Wills of Ireland, 1536-1810."

Book excerpt: Essays offer a chronological survey of the development of English policy towards Ireland in the late 17th - early 18th century. In a series of studies, David Hayton offers a comprehensive account of the government of Ireland during the period of transformation from "New English" colonialism to Anglo-Irish "patriotism", providing a chronological survey of the development of English policy towards Ireland and an account of the changing political structure of Ireland; particular attention is paid to the emergence of an English-style party system under Queen Anne. The Anglo-Irish dimension is also explored, through crises of high politics, and through an examination of the role played by Irish issues at Westminster. In his introduction Professor Hayton provides historical perspective, and establishes Irish political developments firmly in their British context. Professor D.W. HAYTON is Reader in Modern History at Queen's University, Belfast.

Book Indexes to Irish Wills 1536 1858

Download or read book Indexes to Irish Wills 1536 1858 written by and published by . This book was released on 1920 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This series of five volumes was compiled from the existing finding aids at the Public Record Office in Dublin, and published between 1909 and 1920. They contain entries for over 30,000 wills for most of the diocesan consistorial courts of Ireland up to 1800, and many up to 1858 when the administration of wills and probate was removed from church control to the state. Each entry records the testators name, address and year of probate, as well as frequent reference to social status or occupation. The first two volumes were compiled by William Phillimore Watts. After his death in 1913 the tireless Irish genealogist Gertrude Thrift continued the work. The series was cut short by the destruction of the PRO in 1922. But given that the vast majority of the original wills were destroyed in 1922, this index is an essential resource for research. While the books were republished some years ago, they have been out of print for some time. The set reproduced here comes from the Library at Trinity College Dublin, and the publication contains high quality images of all 868 pages, which are fully searchable.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Few details are known about the life of Henry Purcell. This book provides an in-depth analysis of the most obvious documentary evidence of Purcell's career - the music manuscripts of his own hand and those copied by his colleagues. Robert Shay and Robert Thompson offer a richly illustrated study of Purcell's sources, examining in detail the physical features of the manuscripts as well as their musical content. Their survey sheds light on the chronology of composition and copying of Purcell's works and reassesses the place of extant autographs in his musical development. Major sources are fully catalogued, providing information about the context in which Purcell's music was collected and performed, and his handwriting is more closely examined than ever before. The book represents a significant reference tool for scholars, applying a forensic approach that greatly enriches our knowledge of the composer and the music of his time.

Book The Cambridge History of Ireland Volume 1 600 1550

Download or read book The Cambridge History of Ireland Volume 1 600 1550 written by Brendan Smith and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2018-03-31 with total page 686 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The thousand years explored in this book witnessed developments in the history of Ireland that resonate to this day. Interspersing narrative with detailed analysis of key themes, the first volume in The Cambridge History of Ireland presents the latest thinking on key aspects of the medieval Irish experience. The contributors are leading experts in their fields, and present their original interpretations in a fresh and accessible manner. New perspectives are offered on the politics, artistic culture, religious beliefs and practices, social organisation and economic activity that prevailed on the island in these centuries. At each turn the question is asked: to what extent were these developments unique to Ireland? The openness of Ireland to outside influences, and its capacity to influence the world beyond its shores, are recurring themes. Underpinning the book is a comparative, outward-looking approach that sees Ireland as an integral but exceptional component of medieval Christian Europe.
