The need for such a list is apparent, for there are a number of books dealing with picture study in schools, and to locate the material on any one picture requires considerable search. In September, 1912, the Oregon library commission issued a pamphlet on Picture study in the schools which contained among other things an Index to pictures in the state manual. From the idea obtained from this list, a card index on Material on picture study was started in the library of the Eastern Illinois state normal school and has been added to as books on this subject were acquired, until this list is the result. Offering a fresh account of the rise of antiquarianism in the 18th century, Orrells shows how this period of cultural progression was important for the invention of classical studies. In particular, the main focus of this book is on the visionary experimentalism of antiquarian book production, especially in relation to the contentious nature of ancient texts. With the explosion of the Quarrel between the Ancients and the Moderns, eighteenth-century intellectuals, antiquarians and artists such as Giambattista Vico, Johann Joachim Winckelmann, the Comte de Caylus, James Stuart, Julien-David Leroy, Giovanni Battista Piranesi and Pierre-François Hugues d'Hancarville all became interested in how printed engravings of ancient art and archaeology could visualize a historical narrative. These figures theorized the relationship between ancient text and ancient material and visual culture - theorizations which would pave the way to foundational questions at the heart of the discipline of classical studies and neoclassical aesthetics.

Book excerpt: The ancient Tamil poetic corpus of the Caṅam ("The Academy") is a national treasure for Tamilians and a battle-ground for linguists and historians of politics, culture and literature. Going back to oral predecessors probably dating back to the beginning of the first millennium, it has had an extremely rich and variegated history. Collected into anthologies and endowed with literary theories and voluminous commentaries, it became the centre-piece of the Tamil literary canon, associated with the royal court of the Pandya dynasty in Madurai. Its decline began in the late middle ages, and by the late 17th century it had fallen into near oblivion, before being rediscovered at the beginning of the print era. The present study traces the complex historical process of its transmission over some 2000 years, using and documenting a wide range of sources, in particular surviving manuscripts, the early prints, the commentaries of the literary and grammatical traditions and a vast range of later literature that creates a web of inter-textual references and quotations.

The subject of diagnostic radiology is now very large and radiology depa- ments are involved in all areas of modern patient care.The defining event in m- ern radiology,and arguably the most significant development in radiology since Wilhelm Röntgen discovered X-rays, was the invention of the CT scanner in the 1970s.The CT scanner introduced modern cross-sectional imaging and also di- tal imaging.We now have MRI and ultrasound and these techniques are replacing many traditional X-ray procedures.The developments in radiology have been the result of a fruitful interaction between the basic sciences, clinical medicine and the manufacturers. This can be seen by looking at the various sources of these publications. Change is produced by the interactions between the various dis- plines. The editors have had a very difficult task in selecting the key discoveries and descriptions.The radiological literature is very large.Medical imaging continues to develop rapidly and these papers are the foundations of our current practice.
