Book excerpt: Nothing turns a baby's head more quickly than the sight or sound of an animal. This fascination is driven by the ancient chemical forces that first drew humans and animals together. It is also the same biology that transformed wolves into dogs and skittish horses into valiant comrades that would carry us into battle. Made for Each Other is the first book to explain how this chemistry of attraction and attachment flows through -- and between -- all mammals to create the profound emotional bonds humans and animals still feel today. Drawing on recent discoveries from neuroscience, evolutionary biology, behavioral psychology, archeology, as well as her own investigations, Meg Daley Olmert explains why the brain chemistry humans and animals trigger in each other also has a profound effect on our mental and physical well being. This lively and original investigation asks what happens when the bond is severed. If thousands of years of caring for animals infused us with a biology that shaped our hearts and minds, do we dare turn our back on it? Daley Olmert makes a compelling and scientific case for what our hearts have always known, that we were, and always will be, made for each other.

Book The Bond of Empathy in Medieval and Early Modern Literature

Download or read book The Bond of Empathy in Medieval and Early Modern Literature written by David Strong and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2022-09-20 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study examines the various means of becoming empathetic and using this knowledge to explain the epistemic import of the characters’ interaction in the works written by Chaucer, Shakespeare, and their contemporaries. By attuning oneself to another’s expressive phenomena, the empathizer acquires an inter- and intrapersonal knowledge that exposes the limitations of hyperbole, custom, or unbridled passion to explain the profundity of their bond. Understanding the substantive meaning of the characters’ discourse and narrative context discloses their motivations and how they view themselves. The aim is to explore the place of empathy in select late medieval and early modern portrayals of the body and mind and explicate the role they play in forging an intimate rapport.

Book Gothic Revival Worldwide

Download or read book Gothic Revival Worldwide written by Timothy Brittain-Catlin and published by Leuven University Press. This book was released on 2017-01-18 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pugin’s global influence on church architecture and material reform The year 2012 marked the bicentenary of the gothic revival architect A.W.N. Pugin. His influence as a designer not only spread fast globally, but also played a leading part in the transformation of material culture from the mid-nineteenth century onwards. Pugin’s work has been comprehensively reevaluated over the last decade. In this volume sixteen leading scholars from across the globe discuss Pugin’s direct influence on church architecture and furnishing. Beautifully illustrated with a large selection of new photography, Gothic Revival Worldwide, the successor to the volume Gothic Revival published in 2000, reveals how Pugin’s ideas played a profound role in the changing face of material reform in church architecture as an expression of the evolving identity of the churches across the world from North America to Mongolia and the South Pacific. Book The Bounty from the Beach

  • Publisher : ANU Press

Download or read book The Bounty from the Beach written by Sylvie Largeaud-Ortega and published by ANU Press. This book was released on 2018-10-31 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Bounty from the Beach is a collection of cross-disciplinary essays, capitalising on a widely shared fascination for the Bounty story in order to draw scholarly attention to Oceania. It aims to reorient the Bounty focus away from the West, where most Bountynarratives and studies have emerged, to the Pacific, where most of the original events unfolded. It investigates the Bounty heritage from the standpoint of the beach, Greg Dening’s metaphor for culture contact and conflict in the Pacific Islands: this liminal place that transforms Islanders and voyagers, islands and ships, each time it is crossed. It analyses the way newcomers create new islands, and how these changes may occasionally impact the world. This volume examines the ‘little people’, to use another of Dening’s expressions, who stand ‘on both sides of the beach’: they are Polynesian or European or, as beaches are crossed and remade, no longer one without the other, but bound together in processes of change. Among these people are Bounty sailors, beachcombers, Pitcairners and indigenous Pacific Islanders of the past and the present. This collection also explores the works of some renowned Western writers and actors who, turning mutineers after their own fashion and in their own times, themselves crossed the beach and attempted to illuminate the ‘little people’ involved in the Bounty narratives. These prominent writers and actors put the spotlight on characters who were silenced on account of race, class or geographical distance from the dominant centres of power. Inspired by Dening’s empowering voice, our purpose is to fill that silence. Just as it criss-crosses the ocean, progressing with the ship through time and space, TheBounty from the Beach ranges far and wide across disciplines, methodologies and scholarly styles. Its multidisciplinary course contributes to illuminate the multiple ways in which the Bounty heritage embraces diverse horizons. It throws light on the colonial discourse that undertook to stifle Pacific Islander agency, and the neocolonial policies that have been applied to Oceania, and still are: hegemonic moves that have led to global environmental, nuclear and ecological hazards. As a whole, the collection contends that what unfolds in this vast ocean matters: the stakes are high for the whole human community.

Book Thou Shalt Never Get Rid of Us

Download or read book Thou Shalt Never Get Rid of Us written by Miguel Asecas and published by Troubador Publishing Ltd. This book was released on 2021-04-28 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When the foes are inside you, the only option left is to fight... Introducing Thou Shalt Never Get Rid of Us, a story of an uncanny part of Miguel Asecas' life. It is a true story told without makeup. An explosive combination of drugs, stress, and sleep deprivation which led him to an ordeal of twenty-five long years, during which his life elapsed between two very different worlds: the actual world as known by all of us, with a lifestyle not so different than that of many other people. And then there was an inner world full of delusions, paranoia, and auditive hallucinations, in which there are happening situations and appearing characters every time more bizarre. His goal: to not allow “them” to ruin his life. To do that he felt would be enough. This story is also that of a process of personal growth and recovery. He quit taking drugs and transitioned from being almost overwhelmed by the voices to coping successfully with them and even taming them to an extent. This is not a guide, nor a manual for others to copy, but is a tale of courage and triumph all the same.
