Book Mathematical Programming Methods in Structural Plasticity

Download or read book Mathematical Programming Methods in Structural Plasticity written by D. Lloyd Smith and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-05-04 with total page 433 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Civil engineering structures tend to be fabricated from materials that respond elastically at normal levels of loading. Most such materials, however, would exhibit a marked and ductile inelasticity if the structure were overloaded by accident or by some improbable but naturally occuring phenomeon. Indeed, the very presence of such ductility constitutes an important safety provision for large-scale constructions where human life is at risk. In the comprehensive evaluation of safety in structural design, it is therefore unrealistic not to consider the effects of ductility. This book sets out to show that the bringing together of the theory and methods of mathematical programming with the mathematical theory of plasticity furnishes a model which has a unifying theoretical nature and is entirely representative of observed structural behaviour. The contents of the book provide a review of the relevant aspects of mathematical programming and plasticity theory, together with a detailed presentation of the most interesting and potentially useful applications in both framed and continuum structures: ultimate strength and elastoplastic deformability; shakedown and practical upper bounds on deformation measures; evolutive dynamic response; large displacements and instability; stochastic and fuzzy programming for representing uncertainty in ultimate strength calculations. Besides providing a ready fund of computational algorithms, mathematical programming invests applications in mechanics with a refined mathematical formalism, rich in fundamental theorems, which often gives addi- tional insight into known results and occasionally lead to new ones. In addition to its obvious practical utility, the educational value of the material thoroughly befits a university discipline.

Book Analysis of Skeletal Structural Systems in the Elastic and Elastic plastic Range

Download or read book Analysis of Skeletal Structural Systems in the Elastic and Elastic plastic Range written by Adam Borkowski and published by Elsevier Publishing Company. This book was released on 1988 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this book is to provide a smooth transition from linear elasticity through the nonlinear behaviour induced by unilateral constraints to full-scale plasticity. It presents applications of Mathematical Programming to nonlinear static analysis of skeletal structures (trusses, frames, grillages etc.). It is demonstrated that under the assumption of small displacements, a broad class of structural analysis problems exhibit the same internal structure. Such is the case with elastic analysis in the presence of unilateral supports or tension-only members, elastic-plastic analysis in both holonomic and non-holonomic formulations and, finally, ultimate load analysis. Throughout the book a clear and uniform methodology of presentation is used. First a complete set of governing relations is derived for a particular problem. Then that set is shown to be equivalent to a certain minimax problem (the saddle point problem), that in turn can be replaced by a pair of constrained extremum problems (dual MP-problems). Thus the complementary energy principles are established, furnishing the basis for the development of methods of numerical solution.

Book Direct Methods for Limit and Shakedown Analysis of Structures

Download or read book Direct Methods for Limit and Shakedown Analysis of Structures written by Paolo Fuschi and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-01-06 with total page 315 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Articles in this book examine various materials and how to determine directly the limit state of a structure, in the sense of limit analysis and shakedown analysis. Apart from classical applications in mechanical and civil engineering contexts, the book reports on the emerging field of material design beyond the elastic limit, which has further industrial design and technological applications. Readers will discover that “Direct Methods” and the techniques presented here can in fact be used to numerically estimate the strength of structured materials such as composites or nano-materials, which represent fruitful fields of future applications. Leading researchers outline the latest computational tools and optimization techniques and explore the possibility of obtaining information on the limit state of a structure whose post-elastic loading path and constitutive behavior are not well defined or well known. Readers will discover how Direct Methods allow rapid and direct access to requested information in mathematically constructive manners without cumbersome step-by-step computation. Both researchers already interested or involved in the field and practical engineers who want to have a panorama of modern methods for structural safety assessment will find this book valuable. It provides the reader with the latest developments and a significant amount of references on the topic.

Book 50 Years of AIMETA

Download or read book 50 Years of AIMETA written by Giuseppe Rega and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-06-04 with total page 505 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book retraces the history of the Italian Association of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics (AIMETA) since its establishment in 1965. AIMETA is the official Italian association of mechanics adhering to IUTAM (International Union of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics), which organizes and coordinates a meaningful number of research activities, the most important of which are the biennial National Congress and the internationally renowned journal “Meccanica”, published by Springer. Besides collecting and organizing all related important data and information, as far as possible, by distinguishing among the five scientific areas – general mechanics, solids, structures, fluids, machines – encompassed by AIMETA, the history of the association is assumed as a proper perspective to overview the evolution of theoretical and applied mechanics in Italy over about the last fifty years. This is accomplished in the first part of the book. with also a specific focus on the mechanics of solids and structures, where the biographies of a meaningful number of recognized Italian scholars of mechanics in all areas are also provided, along with testimonials and memories by a few senior people meaningfully involved with AIMETA and Italian mechanics. The second part gives an account, although unavoidably incomplete, of recent developments of mechanical sciences in Italy, as reflected also in the activities of AIMETA and with reference to the international context. Contributions by a number of invited senior scholars, still very active, consist of overviews on some scientific themes in the various areas, summaries of achievements of research groups, expressions of research viewpoints, prospects for future developments.
